Question about Singer 2517 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

For a Singer Sewing Machine. The spring on my needle thread tension dial came undone. I've tried to replace it, but I'm not sure I'm putting back together correctly, and my manual doesn't have a good diagram of the working parts. Is there a repair manual or diagram that shows how the components go back together? Thanks

How do you thread a singer merritt 1872?

Wow, one of the few Singer machines that doesn't have a free download manual. Hmmm..... Ok looked up a photo of your machine. It's pretty easy.

1. raise your presser foot.
2. Put thread on spool pin.
3. draw thread over to and under from behind of the pre-tension disc at top
4. Draw thread down from the right and under the tension dial to seat the thread into the tension discs and flex that spring a little.
5. Through the take up lever.
6. Down through the thread guide.
7. Down through the needle bar thread guide.
8. Through the needle.

Hope that helps.

Singer 8280 sewing machine tension won't increase

Make sure your needle and tread match your project. There simply isn't such a thing as a "universal needle." Also try lengthening your stitch. Heavier fabrics typically need a slightly longer stitch. Upon commencing to sew always grasp the 2 threads and slightly pull as you begin your seam.

I assume your garage sale find has a manual. Be sure your bobbin is unspooling in the correct direction. If it didn't come with a manual.. http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/430_8280_es.pdf

Good luck.

I am not sure about this particular machine but in most machines there will be a nob on the front loose low numbers like 0 1 -2 work well on number 3. If the nob is not on the front check and see if it is on the side.

Probably a little heavy duty for a domestic machine - most don't like thread through the bobbin tension device any heavier than 50 grade.

Some tension devices have a hole that you can use to bypass the tension spring (Elna is one) which allows thread like perle cotton to be used in the bobbin. But you still can't put it through the needle (just on the underside for decorative sewing effects) .

In the past I've needed to sew vinyl tractor seats where I was stitching the vinyl to a 1/4" thick foam and after trying everything (roller foot, leather needle) on the domestic machine, I bought a Singer 20U industrial machine with 1 1/2 hp motor in a table in order to seam this weight of textile. Different system needle used and the bobbin could handle heavier weight thread.

Probably not the response you wanted though.
