Partition external 250gb drive

Hi,

I've just purchased a WD external hard drive (250gb) and converted it to NTFS from FAT32, I can't remember how to partition it so that I can split the 250gb off. Using windows XP so any clues would be appreciated.

Thanks
Darsh

Why would you want partition it??? XP will recognise the 250. Partition was useful for win 98, but pointless excercise with XP.

Hi, my ps3 won't recognise my 1tb wd external hard

The problem with the new 1Tb WD Passport that I just purchased is that it is a USB 3.0 format and apparently PS3 doesn't recognize that speed.

Haven't found a workaround for it yet, but all these people advising you to reormat anew Passport drive are wasting your time.

You can convert FAT32 to NTFS, but you cannot reverse this process. If you want to set up the hard drive for FAT32 you need to delete the NTFS partition the create a new partition and then format in FAT32.

Can not get hard drive to convert from fat32 to ntfs

Convert FAT32 to NTFS In Windows XP:

  • Click Start -> Run
  • Enter "cmd" into the text field labeled "Open".
  • Click OK button
  • If you want to convert drive D (D:), enter the command "vol d:" in the command window, to find the volume label for the D: partition
  • Then enter the command "convert d: /fs:ntfs" to convert the D: partition from FAT32 to NTFS
  • When prompted, enter the volume label for the partition

Convert FAT32 to NTFS In Windows Vista and 7:

  • Click Start sphere.
  • In the Start Menu search box, simply enter "cmd" and hit enter.
  • If you want to convert drive D (D:), enter the command "convert d: /fs:ntfs" to convert the D: partition from FAT32 to NTFS that way can be confusing so an easier way is to download a free software heres the link http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

My Ps3 is not reading this new external hard drive I just purchased.

Hi,

The trick with the PS3 is that the HDD must be in FAT32 format. Most External drives nowadays are shipped preformatted using the NTFS file system.

You will have to convert the current partition or a portion of it to FAT32 to allow the PS3 to see it.

You will need a PC to do this on

HDD Partitioning Tool : http://visopsys.org/files/partlogic/partlogic-0.69-iso.zip
Manual : http://partitionlogic.org.uk/manual/index.html

Have not used this particular product myself yet, but it should be quite easy if you follow the steps in the manual.

BD

You cannot format FAT32 on such a big drive unless you break it up into many, many, suitable partitions, to format a drive this size you MUST use NTFS....
You see FAT32 simply cannot mathematically address that amount of address space, it is just that simple.
The biggest size partition is 32 squared or 1024MB

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

Greetings.

files bigger than 4 gigs cannot be save on fat32 drives. NTFS file system is capable of saving files bigger than 4 gigs.

The MAC - to PC did nothing to change it. It did not change while she look it at her pc.

If u want to be able to copy files bigger than 4 gigs to your drive, change the format to ntfs.

  • It is easy to convert partitions to NTFS. The Setup program makes conversion easy, whether your partitions used FAT, FAT32, or the older version of NTFS. This kind of conversion keeps your files intact (unlike formatting a partition). If you do not need to keep your files intact and you have a FAT or FAT32 partition, it is recommended that you format the partition with NTFS rather than convert from FAT or FAT32. Formatting a partition erases all data on the partition and allows you to start with a clean drive. Whether a partition is formatted with NTFS or converted using the convert command, NTFS is the better choice of file system. For more information about Convert.exe, after completing Setup, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. In the command window, type help convert and then press ENTER.

Formatted (on PC) 1TB WD hard drive cannot be altered on Macbook

What OS are you running? What is it formatted as FAT32 or NTFS and how big are the partitions. Various operating systems, hardware and formatting schemes have different limitations. If you want to use the drive in Leopard formatted with NTFS which is the only way to create partitions larger than 20 or 30 GB you may need to install an NTFS file system driver like FUSE.
The other option is to format it as HFS and install Macdrive 7 in Windows to use Mac formatted drives in Windows.

Hope this helps.
