Question about Memorex Ultra Traveldrive - 160GB USB Hard Drive

My computer isn't recognizing my external hard drive. I have reformatted it, but it doesn't seem to help. Do I need to download a specific driver for it?? It works on my laptop, but not on my desktop, so I do know it's working somewhat. Thanks

Are you using the same lead from laptop and desktop to connect this drive
make sure the lead/s that attach to this drive have a secure seating and are not bad/faulty the light on only tells that its getting power it might not be getting enough power you might test the lead/s or
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you should see a yellow question mark?
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb drive but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

I usually face scenarios like yours and this is what i normaly do. Firstly Change the USB ports(in other words try all the usb ports you have on the computer. If it doesnt work try to use a diffrent USB cable. If it doesnt, then open up the hard drive and remove the usb connector and connect it directly to your computer's motherboard as a slave. Here, no doubt you will access it. Even though you have re-installed Windows 7, maybe your computer needs High speed USB Drivers

1. Three things could be happening here.
One the drive isn't completely formatted.
Two you have a bad USB controller in the USB external case.
Three you could have a bad USB cable.

if your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it
click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

My computer wont recognize the drive or allow me to reformat my passport.


Try downloading the device driver from western digital site for your respective OS. And try formatting it with the western digital inbuilt software, which works great.

While transfering a file from pc to hd computer froze. I then unpluged the drive and then pc come back to normal now the external will not get recognised


It sounds like you have a serious problem. If you cannot get the HDD to read at all and your computer will not recognize it, you have a bad "sector" of the drive.

As a metaphor:
Your drive has little "squares," each square stores information on it. Your computer will break the data down into these squares and store it in segments. When your computer freezes its because it is "confused" as to why it cannot store the data. When you remove the HDD, the computer then assumes it's to stop and resumes regular activity.

The solution:
A) Go to “My Computer” right click on the Hard Drives icon and go to “Properties,” then go to “Tools” and then to “Error Checking.” Also then “Defragment”

If that doesn’t work:
B) Try to reinstall the updated drivers on the manufactures web-site. After you have reinstalled the drivers reformat the Hard Drive. Reformat your hard drive by going into "My Computer" and right clicking the HDD and selecting "Format." Follow the prompt.

try pluging it into a different usb port try a different cable if they all do not work then the partision table has been damaged and the drive will have to be reformatted
