Hello. My Asus PV5D2-MX mobo takes DDR2 memory modules. Is it backwards compatible with the older DDR memory?

Sorry, but you are out of luck. DDR memory is not compatible with DDR2 memory slots.

DDR2 memory is pretty inexpensive, though. Example: here is 2GB on Newegg for $35:

Just make sure to match the timings to what your motherboard supports.

It should be, it says this about your memory support.
  • 4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory
  • DDR3 2200+/1800/1600/1333/1066/800 MHz

  • Here is a list of compatible memory for that motherboard

Some memory brands are not compatible with some motherboards. Go to the motherboard web page and check it for the kind and brand of memory you can use.

    Asrock K7VM2 Motherboard Memory Upgrade

Some MOBO support different type of memory modules like ddr 400, 333,533 and other, if your computer is working fine with that PC400 it only means that your MOBO is compatible with it. Since you're planning to upgrade the memory just get another PC400 because the memory should be the same to work fine.
