Question about AEG Lavamat 88840 Front Load Washer

1 Answer

The wash cycle works, the pump wprks, but the spin will not. There is a high pitched buzz and our overload switch throws out when it hits the spin cycle. I have taken the motor out and the brushes look fine. The bearings seem noisy and should probably be replaced but it still spins freely and smoothly. The washing machine is about 15 years old.

Thanks Ginko. The machine is an AEG Lavamat 538-W frontloader but the website wouldn't accept that and I had to tick something

The pump works and seems to empty everything, although having read your spin link I must say the contact on the sensor at the base at back of the drum looks a bit corroded. The main motor drives the drum for a wash but fails when the spin comes on. Would worn brushes make the main motor fail under a load?

Thanks Ginko, the advice was useful. I can't see any obvious shorts so I'll take the motor in for testing. If the motor's OK I'll look at replacing the CCU or the MCU

If the switch trips off, that means that there is an abnormal power draw, which means a short. If the pump is humming you probably have a defective pump motor. The fact that brushes look OK does not exclude that the motor windings are internally shorting. Remove the pump and read Ohms on pump motor contacts. a shorted motor will read zero Ohms. The definitive test will be done by a tech energizing the motor directly (jumping it), then connecting power. That will probably trip the breaker, telling the tech that the motor must be replaced. For safety reasons I suggest only carrying tests that can be done with power off. After 15 years the pump is probably gone.

For general No-Spin issues, see this: If you have no spin...
In your case the situation is different, I think you have a defective pump motor. If problem is not the motor, then it is either wiring harness or timer (uncommon). In that case the breaker trips immediately before pump starting. Check also that problem is not main drive motor. It may be shorting when spin cycle starts. In that case the pump will drain before going to spin.

Worn carbon brushes is not necessarily the cause of the problem , but that tells you that the drive motor is old. The problem is not the carbon brushes. Since the variable speed motor is turning at slow speed, the brushes are still working. The brushes can be tested ensuring that they are touching the commutator (read Ohms) , but in any case when brushes are too worn motor will simply not spin.

The short may be given by the motor winding shorting. When that happens the whole motor must be replaced (re-winding is not worth and it is not done anymore).

More commonly the short may occur in the CCU (main control board) or MCU (motor control unit). One of the two boards can short when energizing the variable speed motor for spin part of the cycle. The motor control unit (if present) is in a sealed module inside the washer. MCU connects to CCU and to motor. Since boards are difficult to test, look if there is trace of short in any of the two modules (burnt spots - component melting- smell). If there is none, go back to motor and test it for shorts using a growler: Armature Test ( it can also be energized jumping it at high speed). Check the boards first.

My model GLET1041AS2 Frigidaire Laundry Center fills/agitates, but does not pump or spin. The timer would make a slight buzzing/timer sound when it hits the spin cycle, but nothing else.

The circuit board has a Cycle generator and sequencer that accepts commands when you manually do a setting. When the sequence enters the spin phase a block occurs and discontinues further action. It is not the timer, but the command center on the circuit board. Because the board has many functions, it is like a set of Christmas Tree lights in series, and when one bulb fails, so goes the set. You will no doubt need a new command board for that model.

Our Frigidaire Front load washer FWTR445RF50, washes fine. But the water does not drain out after the wash and the spin cycle does not work. At the spin cycle, the washer acts like the door is not fully...

it won't spin unless the water is drained out.a bad door switch could cause this and is the easiest part to change, and if it's buzzing and it's coming from the switch i'd say you have a bad door switch, also on these machines they had problems with the door hinge the door would sag down and when you go to close it it would hit the bottom of the switch instead of the strike going in the middle of the switch and crack or break the switch,if you think your door is doing this, replace the door switch and when you go to close the door lift up on it when closing so it closes more thing it's not draining so if the door switch doesn't totally fix it check the drain pump and the hose that goes from the tub to pump,it might have a coin catch in it that can get clogged stopping the pump from draining or a bad pump but i would change out the door switch first it could fix your problem before you start getting into the pump, much easier to replace and i've changed a few door switches on these washers, good luck.the door switch part number is 131763256.go here put your model number in go to where it says wash cab,top look at part number 8 this is your door lock,it gives a different number but for some reason sears hasn't updated the site with the newest numbers but the number i gave you is the newest number for the part

High pitched buzz/whine during wash cycle only, spin fine

1) Make sure valve is open all the way 2) some machines have a screen inside of the hose hook up which could be clogged. 3) last check to see if it is the hot or cold by switch your selector switch on your machine to hot then cold. If one of these positions eliminate the noise then the valve in the machine is bad.
