Had a Kelvinator KSV80HRA Rev cycle split installed months ago. It goes to defrost mode when turned on and doesn't start up. It is set to heat but blows a stream of cold air downwards towards the wall but no fan is blowing. Can you help me to set it straight the nights are getting cold !

Hi

It sounds like a sensor issue that means problem with thermistor or thermocouple although it may be the controller board.
Unless you know how to work on equipment like this, I urge you to get a professional to service the unit for you.

Also if the outside temperature is below a certain point when you start up your unit, the compressor will initially run in defrost mode to avoid damage to your unit. Once the compressor heats up, it will automatically switch to heating mode. This procedure takes around 10 minutes.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

Thank you for contacting fixya.com

My wall air con kelvinator just installed turned off after 2 hrs and H1 came up on display

H1 is defrost mode. This means that the outdoor coil has gotten too cold and needs to warm itself up in order to continue heating. Heating will resume in a short period. Nothing wrong with machine, this is normal when outdoor air temps are extremely cold.

Heat pump runs on electric when outside temperature is higher than cutin

Check your thermostat and heat pump owner's manuals. Thermostat may be programmed to require electric heat at higher temps. Also could be bad outdoor temperature sensor tied to
Heat pump system controls (I had that problem) When was it installed? Warranty thermostat and or Heat pump? Call installer
Thermostat programming is a headache. No help from installer? call customer service heat pump and thermostat. Some possibility of bad installer wiring. There is also a heat pump "defrost" cycle. Usually the Electric coil will turn on to compensate for the Defrost cycle which is just the standard air conditioning mode therefore moves heat from inside to the outside coil to melt the frost. This cycle may be occurring too often. I had that problem. Fixed under warrantee.
Heat pumps are complex machines. The controls even more.
You need a tech, hopfully you are still under warranty.
Hope this helps.

I have a Mitsubishi heat pump that runs well but the outdoor unit does not defrost what could be the problem.

Why does my heat pump ice up in Winter?
Heat pumps naturally ice-up in the winter. It is normal for the entire coil to be covered in a white frost and even light ice, during cold weather conditions. However, it is bad for the entire unit to be encased in ice. This indicates ductless heat pump problems which should be addressed quickly to save energy and avoid serious damage to your ductless unit. These systems should periodically go into a defrost cycle. This keeps the unit running efficiently. If the coils are blocked by ice, proper heat transfer between the coil and the outside air will not occur.
How does the defrost mode work?
When the mini split heat pump goes into defrost, the reversing valve inside of the outdoor unit is energized, switching the system from heat to the air conditioning mode. The outdoor coil becomes the hot, the indoor coil becomes cold, and both - the outdoor and indoor fans shut off. This allows the outdoor coil to melt accumulated ice. When the built-in micro-computer analyzes that all ice have been melted, the heat pump heating system goes back to heating mode.
sanyo-mini-split-defrost.pngA cloud of water vapor may be seen rising over the outdoor unit and a "whoosh" sound can be heard as the refrigerant reverses direction. The entire process usually takes up to 10 minutes (depending on conditions).
How often does the system goes into defrost mode?
Ductless mini-split heat pumps have different ways of determining when to go into defrost. The built-in microcomputer determines outdoor temperature, refrigerant pressures, and several other factors. In colder temperatures the system will go into defrost more often than in warmer.
If a ductless mini split heat pump is severely iced-up in the winter it is possible that it isn't defrosting (though there could be many other causes). Let the manufacturer certified technician check your system

The Kelvinator technician came out and found that our gas was very low indicating that there was a leak somewhere - the gas should never deplete apparently (being a closed system). He checked inside and outside and couldn't find a leak so assumed it must have been an issue with the piping in the walls. He recommended not spending the money to get it repaired - he recommended it be replaced (not a cheap option but it was 11 years old and repairing wasn't likely to be cheap or a long term solution). So not sure if that is your problem but hope it helps!

New install. 40 seconds on. 20 seconds off.

Its normal that the air coming out is warm cause you set it to heat mode. Check your setting temperature, it is normal for the unit to shutdown when it will attain the setting temperature and operate when the temperature is lower than the setting temperature(heat mode).
