Question about Health & Beauty

1 Answer

My mother in law is very deaf in one ear and has poor hearing in the other. How can I tell if her own hearing is at fault or her hearing aid battery needs changing or there is some other fault causing her problem. She had a stroke last year that has not helped, but it would be good to eliminate any thought that her hearing aids are not right.

I have a similar issue with my 86 year old mother-in-law and her hearing aids. Depending on how long they are worn/turned ON, determines how long the battery in each one will last. In my mother-in-laws case, she waits to long to change the batteries or doesn't keep the volume turned up high enough. So, in her case, the battery(s) get weak, before she realizes it. The other thing that is most important is when we age our body (ears in this case) physically change and the hearing aid(s) that were originally fitted several years before, don't fit as well as they should. I am also convinced that their hearing continues to deteriorate and they should be tested and fitted with a new hearing appliance, as needed.

The down side to this, is that hearing aids are not inexpensive. So, if Medicare, Medicaid or their own private insurance want cover at least part of the cost, most people don't want to pay for new ones. Or as my mother-in-law says, "Oh, they're working alright." When in fact, they're not. My wife and I can tell by the volume on her TV. When you can hear it from one floor to another, her hearing aids aren't working right.

How much are hearing aids?

Hearing aids range in cost depending on where you live. In Tennessee they range from $2000-$7000 a pair (people usually one in each ear). The cost usually includes testing, devices, programming by audiologist, warranty for repairs and loss as well as follow up visits to ensure you are satisfied. Entry level hearing aids help you hear in basic situations, mid level price makes hearing aids more "automatic" with noise reduction for difficult situations, premium hearing aids have Bluetooth, ear to ear wireless, and do a better job of categorizing sound( deciding whether the sound is music, speech, noise, car noise, wind etc). A good audiologist will be able to help you choose based on your budget and can easily explain the different styles and features. This is part of the cost, you are paying for their expertise. Most audiologists have a preferred brand, one that they are most comfortable with. I have fit all of the brands and have come to see that each brand has pros and cons. New Hearing aids are no longer simple amplifiers, but they can never replace how the ear and brain processes sound. There is the old adage that you get what you pay for, but always get the return policy in writing. Most professionals give you a trial period outside of the office to see how they work in the real world. Some states have laws that say you can get a full refund within 30 days.

Are the noise levels at rock concerts damaging to your ears? I really like going to gigs but my mum is convinced that I am going to go deaf!

Your mum isn't totally wrong, although you aren't likely to go instantly deaf. Seriously loud music can damage your ears and affect your hearing in the future. You should always wear ear plugs when you're at nightclubs and rock concerts.

Hearing aids keep shutting down. Batteries get wet.

First you should probably keep your hearing aid and battery away from water.I suggest taking it out while in the shower/bath and cover your head with a hood or umbrella while out on a rainy day.If battery keeps shutting down then replace the old battery with a new one.If problem keeps accorring then maybe its time to take your hearing aid into your local hearing aid repair and let them solve the whole issue with why it keeps shutting down

When you have a fitting for a hearing aid they make a mould of that ear ie.left or right. So just try and see which goes where. They take a little time to get used to putting in.

DEAD

Cbolis,

If your hearing aid is dead and you have replaced the battery, and checked the sound tube or ear mold sound tube for ear wax, then you must tell me more about the problem.

For instance; are you an experienced HA user or not? Have you had the problem before? When did it go "Dead"? How often has this event occurred. Have you had the instrument long? How old is it? In the ear or behind the ear model? Or Other? If any of my comments have solved your problem please let me know.

In my opinion the problem is either acoustic or electronic. It can also be an acoustic problem in relation to your hearing loss and the condition of your ear.

We can continue do do this to solve your problem if you wish. We can continue with Q&A to solve. Or if you would like a local referral for service please give me a zip code. Thanks for asking FixYa Expertise.

Hearing Aid Support

Because every person has a different extent of hearing loss with a different type, this is difficult to answer. Some believe that there are benefits to wearing two aids. Obviously they provide for a more balanced hearing by better directing sound from different areas. Some believe that two aids provide more clarity and allow the user to hear better in noisy locations. A licensed professional or audiologist will best be able to recommend whether one or two aids will work best for you.

Hearing Aid Question

Behind-the-Ear (BTE) - Sits behind your ear and is connected to an ear mold placed inside your ear via tubing. BTE devices are fastened on the ear with an ear hook and the ear molds are custom made to fit the user's ear. In the Ear (ITE) - These are placed in the ear of the wearer. In the Canal (ITC) and Completely in the Canal (CIC) - With ITCs and CICs, the whole hearing aid is placed inside the canal. ITCs are often larger than CIC devices. CICs are extremely tiny in size and are almost invisible. Body-worn hearing aids - These aids use an external box worn by the user. The user wears an ear piece which is attached to the box by a wire. There are also disposable hearing aids available which have a built-in battery and, after the allotted hour or time usage, the user simply replaces the entire aid.
