My 60 GB PS3 wont run PS2 games

My 60 GB PS3 stopped running ps2 games. It runs Ps3 games and blu-rays ok but it wont even bring the PS2 games up in the launch menu. the machine has also gone to the screen (at start-up) that says the machine needs to rebuild the drive structure. But then says it has to reformat. I still have 6 GB of space left on the drive.

I have a same problem, when i upgraded my ps3 and i try to play my ps2 game, i got a black screen and nothing else appears, everything else are running fine. im using the 60gb too

will it still play dvd's? ps2 disks are just glorified dvd's. it may be a firmware problem, but not likely.

Actually only 60GB PS3s supports PS2 games. But It requires particular firmware. In first instance try updating your system, then dissable the disc autoload function, insert PS2 game, and look at the game section if your soft will recognise it. If yes just try to play

Good luck

How do you set up playstation 3 to play playstation 2 games

One Surefire WayThe only way how to play PS2 games on PS3 is to have the correct version of the console. Either your Playstation 3 can play PS and PS2 games or it can’t, and there’s not much to do about it. Most of the PS3 models simply cannot play older titles as they lack the necessary hardware and firmware. However, a few models do have backwards compatibility. The 20 Gb, 60 Gb, and original 80 Gb models all have backwards compatibility, either through hardware or software emulation. The other models lack backwards compatibility, so even knowing how to play PS2 games on PS3 won’t help you out much here.
However, if you do have the correct console model, then there isn’t much to know for learning how to play PS2 games on PS3. Simply insert the game CD or DVD (many original Playstation games are also supported thankfully), and the game will start up. Sometimes, it will tell you that you can’t play the game, but simply hook your PS3 up via wireless or ethernet connection and update the firmware (which also provides improved compatibility with newer versions of Blu-ray discs). Often, this will fix the problems, but not all PS and PS2 games are supported (although most are).
There you have it. Learning how to play PS2 games on PS3 is easy, but if you just randomly picked a Playstation 3 model out at your local retailer, you might have a model lacking in backwards compatibility. One reason they didn’t include such compatibility with all models is an issue of cost, as it saved Sony some money to not include such a feature on all of the models. When they first started selling PS3s for $400, they were losing several hundred dollars (although they are at least breaking even now). Unfortunately, both the new 80 Gb and 160 Gb PS3 models are lacking in such compatibility, so you’ll need to find older models to support your older games.

Please rate my solutions! =)

Aleksandar Adzic

Responds to ps2 games but not ps3 games

The PS3 has a DVD ps1/ps2 (red lazer) and Blue Ray (blue lazer) reader built in, seems like your blueray is kaput.

Ps3 won't play game or certain dvds

Ok go out and get a cd cleaner.
Should take care of it IF ITS DUST>
It costs 7-10$ and if it fixes your issue then you save a bunch!
If not you will need to make sure Sony's warrenty is not valid and its not if you dont have the recipet.
You can take it apart and instal a new blu ray unit or send it to sony for 150$ plus s&h.
I have blu ray parts if you need them.

PS: what size is the ps3? 20-40-60-80 gb hd?

MY japoneese ps3

The pal ps2 games and dvds will not play on a Japanese ps3 due to region coding. You can play all ps3 games and blu ray films because they do not use region coding. Some games will also play differently on a ps3, for example, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (I highly recommend the game) will not have any blood on a Japanese ps3. The region coding feature can not be changed/modified. I would recommend returning Japanese ps3 and purchasing a European model instead if that is possible. Bon chance.
