Question about Sony STR-DH500 A/V Receiver

Open Question

Sony STR-DH500 receivers transformer gets noise(buzz) after warm up The noise comes from the amplifier (not from the speakers) Any advice please?

    Yes I have the same problem. I have a SONY STR DH500 and as soon as it gets warm about 10-20 minutes later starts to produce a constant noise as you say buzz.
    Its not too loud but its loud enough to notice and ruin the home theatre experience in my home cinema set up! Even makes headache as well.
    Its really annoying as my unit is a brand new unit and was never used before.
    It shouldn't have any problem like this as I have an ancient Sherwood amp and that has no noise at all with the same set up.
    Shame...
    Please give me feedback what happened to yours?

My receiver say's "Protect" or turns on then off. What's wrong? Seven times out of ten it is a shorted speaker or speaker wire. To determine your exact problem, the first step is to disconnect all speaker wires "at your receiver" Next: Turn the receiver back on. If your receiver still says "protect" or turns off, it needs to be serviced. If your receiver stays on; reconnect your speakers one at a time and power back up after each speaker. You may find that after reconnecting all speaker wires it works! Most commonly the small braids of wire from the + to the - have touched and have caused the problem. In some instances, you noticed the problem only when turning the volume up. either way, make sure the exposed wires to your receiver are no longer than 1/2" long and are completely under the screw down terminal or slide in. When you've found the wire or speaker with the problem, your receiver will go back into "protect" At this point, disconnect the wire from the speaker at the speaker that may be causing the problem then test again.* Note* Make sure speaker wires do Not touch each other as this Will cause a short! If you turn the receiver back on and it stays on, you now know the problem is in your speaker itself. To test your speaker, you will need a multimeter. Set it to ohms resistance and touch the speaker terminals, if there is a short internally the meter will read "1......" If it's an analog meter, it will peg to the right. There's your problem. Now, within any speaker there are quite a few possibilities as to what could be causing the problem. Most common is a blown coil and the speaker needs to be replaced. Some speakers have internal crossovers (usually floor standing speakers) and may have a shorted or burnt board (usually very visible brown burn marks on the board) and can possibly be repaired if your handy with a soldering iron. Now, if you disconnect the speaker wire at the speaker and it still says "protect" Check your wire for the obvious cut or nail thru the wire if possible. If your system has wiring that runs behind walls, you may need to use your meter again. Disconnect the wire at both ends, keep the ends separated, put your meter on ohms resistance and touch probes to the + and - wires at one side. If the meter pegs to the right or reads "1...." the wire is shorted and needs to be replaced or repaired at the short. Hope this helps.

These models are known for this issue.
I've had my share in the shop here.
Disconnect all speakers,turn speakers off, try headphones only
If it still persists then there is either :
1. power supply capacitors gone bad or 2. The thermal fuse in the transformer is open.
A tech can very easily find out if the thermal fuse is open by checking the primary of the transformer
if the plastic is shrinking away from the power supply capacitors then they've gone bad

I have a sony STR-DH510 receiver and the speaker set that goes with the DAV-BC 150. i hooked up the speakers but i couldn't get the sub to output any sound. is there anything i can do to get it to work?


Hello ,you will want to go into the setup mode on the remote and make sure the subwoofer is turned on,it might be turned off .You can view the setings right on the front of the reciever as your scrolling thru speaker setting options.

What could be causing a power hum for about 1 to 2 minutes after startup? Sony STR-DE825


Depends where the hum originates. If it is from the case, it is likely from the transformer which may rattle laminations a bit till it warms.

If it is out of the speakers, then the amplifiers MAY not be balancing till warm up... that would not be good... keep your eye on that and if it gets loud, take it for repair ASAP.

If unit is old, the filter caps may be going bad OR there may be a bad solder joint in the power supply area that doesn't contact till it gets warm... that also needs fixing ASAP.

Can i use a turntable with the sony str dh500 model? I am illiterate when it comes to hooking this stuff up. Planning to purchase this model only if I can hook up my record player as well as my cd player.


This particular unit only has 2 line level inputs for audio devices. You can use 1 for the CD player and the other for the Turntable. Please note that you will need a phono pre-amp for the turntable as the inputs on the receiver are line level. The preamp will amplify the phono level to line level.

Yes - PS3 with a HDMI cable for picture, Fiber Optic for sound, Wii use either component or composite cables, and PC use the left and right jacks.

Loud buzzing at the first volume setting


Check all your wires and make sure that none of the wires that are powering any equipment (including extension cords, power bars, and power cables on the unit itself) are running parallel to any of the audio cables going to your speakers or from your inputs to your unit. This could be what's called AC hum, which is caused when the electrical current causes interference that gets picked up by the audio cables and amplified by your system. Just make sure you move the power cords as far away as possible from the audio cables.
