SOURCE: how do change the battery in a BSA HD42SB

It should be seated inside the windage knob, if not look for a slotted type indentation in one of the knobs, and turn that cap counter clockwise with a coin that fits snugly in the slot while holding the sides of the knob.

It will be a pancake style battery.

SOURCE: cross hairs sideways?!

If you are seeing an X you need to loosen the scope rings, re-level your scope and re-tighten the scope rings. 10-20 in/lbs on the ring screws, 15-30 in/lbs on the mounting screws. Typical configuration of the turrets is one on the top, one on the right side.

SOURCE: The rubber coating is tacky

Unfortunately this sounds like the scope coating was exposed to some petroleum based product.

Hand or Suntan lotions, bug repellants or certain types of cleaning solutions.. even the vapors from them can cause rubber to destabilize.

    Bsa contender 3-12x50

Unfortunately, BSA keeps changing the design of the Contender. The earlier models had a thin rubber coating which does indeed scratch and peel very easily and is tacky. I fixed mine by VERY CAREFULLY rubbing down the scope with automotive acrylic enamel reducer. Not all parts of the scope are coated. Just the lens caps, turret covers, and the main body. It took a couple rolls of towels and a lot of patience, but you basically just need to keep rubbing with solvent soaked clothes until you no longer can get any black off. The 2nd generation of Contenders did not have the rubber coating, however they were short lived as BSA once again changed the Contender design to a side parallax adjuster, along with a hefty new price. In my experience, the 2nd gen Contenders were the best value for the money.

The rubber coating is tacky to the touch, and the O-ring in the eye piece has rolled out. This is on a BSA Contender 6x24x50.

Every time i set the scope the pelets hit ese

    I would check your pellets.

Light pellets typically perform horrible in break barrel rifles due to their tendancy to fly around

Make sure you have a stiff, tight fitting pellet. Smaller soft pellets also will contribute to accuracy issues as they deform much and can let air escape from around the skirt when fired (called "blo by")
