Does this information work on a desktop as well?

SOURCE: acer t180 restore
A restore- from start to finish- should take 1 1/2 to 2 hours as a general rule of thumb. However, you should be seeing some activity in that time frame. If it is sitting on the same screen for even a half hour, restart the process.
Just as a question, what are you trying to fix that you think you should wipe out the whole thing and start over? Maybe we can help.

If the recovery partition is intact, boot the machine and press ALT + F10 simultaneously. If the partition still exists and hasn't been corrupted, the machine will take you through the recovery process of which Factory Restore is among the options.
