Error code 161->dead battery .
and 163->time and date were not set->Reseat the keyboard connector on the video card, and set the time and date.
1. Power-off the computer and unplug the AC Adapter
from the computer.
2. Open the keyboard, and remove the diskette
drive/CD-ROM drive, the battery pack, and the hard
disk drive.
3. Remove the top cover and keyboard unit.
4. Open the keyboard unit; then remove the keyboard
card.
5. Remove the backup battery from the keyboard card.
(Refer to "1200 Backup Battery, Speaker, Standby
Battery" on page 288 to remove the battery.)
6. Measure the voltage of the backup battery. See the

Hi garyr49,

Error 163 indicates a dead CMOS battery. The Error 161 means that time and date not set which makes sense because CMOS battery is dead. To resolve this issue you need to get a replacement CMOS battery.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

    Hi garyr49,

If after replacing the CMOS battery and the system prompted you with password it's because there's a BIOS password that was setup in your machine. BIOS password can be reset by using a software. Here are two software to reset or retrieve BIOS passwords:

    1. !Bios - is a PC BIOS toolkit offering password removal/decrypt and BIOS settings modification /backup /restore.

    2. CmosPwd - CmosPwd decrypts password stored in CMOS.

    Hope it helps.

    Thank you for using Fixya.

    Hi garyr49,

If after replacing the CMOS battery and the system is asking you for a password it's beacuse there's a BIOS password that was setup in your machine. There are softwares that you can use to reset BIOS passwords. You may try the software I have below:

!Bios - is a PC BIOS toolkit offering password removal/decrypt and BIOS settings modification/backup/restore.

CmosPwd- decrypts password stored in CMOS.

    Hope it helps.

I have several 600's and they all have the same issue. They are giving 161 192 163 errors. I replaced the battery in them and then go to try and setup the time. However, instead of letting me set the...

Hi,

161 = CMOS configuration lost (battery has died).

163 = CMOS error; Clock is not updating.

192 = System fan is faulty, not plugged into the system board or the system board itself is faulty.

Whe you replaced the RTC (real time clock/BIOS battery) did you make sure that the CPU fan was working?

If it is then go back into the BIOS and reset it to defaults. Save the changes and reboot, then go back into the BIOS and try to set the time and date.

Regards.

Replace batery

This battery is located in a slot on the motherboard. It's been a while since I've had a 380 apart, and I can't remember whether it's on the top or the bottom of the board. Start by removing the keyboard, if it's on the top, you will be able to see it. If it's on the bottom, then you will need to remove the motherboard in order to get to it.

174 error message on thinkpad 380

Try this:
Start with the machine OFF, hold down and CONTINUE TO HOLD the "F1" key and turn on the power WHILE STILL HOLDING DOWN "F1"
This should get you into the bios/setup, which on most thinkpads is pretty simple and self explanatory. You can reset the date, and something called "initialize" as I remember.
POST YOUR MODEL NUMBER!!!!
Ibm.com's support is famous for having very good, extensive support for thinkpads. I searched for this error no. but we really need the model number
