How do I test the heating elements on Bosch Powerstar AE125 with multimeter

Product manual shows electro-mechanical thermal cutout page 9 but offers no troubleshoot steps except to say that overheating is cause.

http://www.bosch-climate.us/files/201009211859150.EP-23_Removing_and_replacing_element_assembly.pdf

Test elements:
Remove both wires off element.
Set multimeter to read ohms.
Watt and volt rating appear on side of each element.
Ohm = Volts squared divided by wattage.
For example:
Assume 240Volt circuit (240 Volts squared = 57600)
Assume 9000 watt element > check side of element for rating.
So 57600 divided by 9000 watt element = 6.4 ohms

Have you de-limed this unit?
Is there a check valve causing closed system in the plumbing, that might also cause decreased water flow?
Are there reduced-flow faucets or clogged aerators?
What happens when suspect cut-out element is no longer connected? The unit should continue heating.

Question posted under Bosch tankless.
Question says 'tank'
Brand, model, and type heater unknown.
Elements mean electric.
'Thermal cutout pops when taking shower produces cold water' indicates tankless, since tank-type would maintain some hot water.
No error code might indicate tank-type.
Add a comment with type, brand and model number of heater for possible assistance.

You need to find and set at full its thermostat. Usually it is placed where its on light and power wire goes, open the screws and set thermostat on full position and close the screws again.

The easiest thing to do would be to call Bosch and just ask for a new heater for free. The other option is to call Bosch and have them send you all new elements. If there is power, there should be heat of some kind.

Water is no longer hot

A heating element is either good or bad and no inbetween. If your unit has two elements, then one of the elements is bad. If it is a single element unit then the thermostat has gone bad. Do a voltage check to see if you have power going to both elements and if you do then do a ohms test on the elements. They shoudl read 5 to 10 ohms. If one of them doens't, then you know it is bad. If by chance check the elements and everything is working, the only thing that can be left is that the dip tub has ruptured somewhere close to the top of the outlet. But I would put my money on a bad element.

New rheem water heater only gives about 5 minutes of luke warm water.checked the elements with ohm meter all ok.tstats ok.

Given that both elements are in working order, and the unit was filled before the elements were powered up. Here are a few other areas to troubleshoot.

Note: Electric water heaters contain high voltage, so care and safety must be employed when attempting any service or repair. Do not attempt any service, if you are not secure in your abilities.
Quality non-conductive gloves and eye protection should be worn.

First check that power is being supplied to each thermostat and then to the element when the thermostat is active. Make final temperature adjustments evenly, so as to not over work one element.

Next, check that trapped air is purged from the tank, by placing a catch pan under the TPRV (temperature and pressure relief valve) and quickly engaging it to see if air escapes, if it does then continue until only water is released.

Finally check to be sure that during installation, the cold water feed and the hot water supply lines were installed to their proper locations at top of tank.

Good luck...Let me know the results of your tests.

Water is lukewarm and the thermostat is set at maximum . I checked and only one of the element is getting power

It sounds like the element is burned out and needs to be replaced.

To do this the water supply to the tank needs to be turned off, as well as the power supply (Breakers) and the tank drained.

As a preventative measure replace them both while the tank in empty.

Note: do not power the unit until it is full of water and the tank is purged of all trapped air.

Good luck...

PowerStar AE125 seems to have failed

You have a blown element. If you purchased the heater, call Bosch for technical assistance, and the unit should be under warranty. The grey matter your getting is the magnesium that the elements have in them.
