Question about Garden
Does sound like the solenoid. If you are a brave sole, you can test this in the following manner.
Take a car jumper cable and jump the PLUS side of the battery to the starter PLUS terminal and, if the engine turns over, get a new solenoid.
I should caution you that it will throw a heck of a spark when you do this so be prepared. Connect the jumper cable to the PLUS side of the battery FIRST so you don't draw the spark over the battery. Also, if your engine has seized up, this will draw max current from your battery which is not a good thing so use your own judgement on this.
Do this at your own risk and, If you are not sure you want to try it, probably best to just get a new solenoid as you are probably going to need it someday anyway.

I had the same type of problem with my 36" Murray with an 11HP Briggs and Straton. I think I have solved it now. The positive lead from the battery had some corrosion on it so did not seem to be working reliably. I made up a solution of baking powder and and warm water and used an old toothbrush to clean it up. Also disconnected and reconnected most other electrical leads and it then started working.
