Maytag neptune dryer heats but wont tumble

When you spin it by hand, is there resistance? Can you hear the motor turning? In fact, when you switch it on and it starts to heat, can you hear the motor turning, or is it silent?

Sounds like the belt is broken, in which case there will be little resistance.

If there is resistance, it may be the motor or circuitry controlling the motor.

Ive changed the belt on my white knight tumble dryer CL 372 once put back together the drum won't turn and makes a loud noise

There are two do-nut shaped rollers that the tumbler rests on located behind the tumbler. One or both could be bad. Some models have a single "axle" in the center of the tumbler that may be causing the problem.

Dryer tumbler does not seem to be on properly. The belt looks to be in good shape and in place. Dryer does not tumble at all. How does the tumbler attach to front of dryer?

Hi Jon - I understand you want to verify how the tumbler is attached to the front of the dryer; however I would never personally recommend replacing crucial parts without touching base with a certified professional due to liability and safety reasons. Let me ask you this, do you hear a grinding noise? If you do not chances are the motor does not operate. This would also cause the fan to not circulate and motor would need to be replaced. From what you have described and if the belt seems to be in place, there is possibly a communication failure between the control and the motor. Which in this case, I would suggest contacting a certified technician to assist in the full diagnosis and repair of your dryer.

My dryer is 4 years and the heater wont heat up but the tumbler tumbles

First check your dryer vent, make sure that it is venting properly. If that doesn't work then it is your dryer heating elements.

Today our dryer quit drying. It hums but is not tumbling.

Dryers are belt driven. Something has locked the drum or motor, and that is why you hear the humming sound. With the dryer turned off, reach inside the drum and try to turn it. It should turn pretty freely. There will always be some drag. If you need a lot of effort to turn the drum, then it is time to investigate what is causing the drag. Probably, something has gotten wedged between the drum and the front wall of the dryer.

If you cannot find anything there, then it could be helpful to remove the outer shell from the dryer and investigate further to find the source of the drag. This requires some mechanical skill, so think carefully if you want to try it or call a service company or simply replace the dryer. A used dryer can cost $100 or less.

Dryer now vibrates after cleaning lint filter, however clothes are tumble drying normally.

dryers have to have a way of allowing the tumbler (that's the thing you put the clothes in) to turn freely, not all of them are the same tho, some use bearings, some use slides, others use rollers. Over time these rollers will need to be oiled, the slides will get thin and start metal to metal contact causing a noise, The rear bearings will then start to make their way to china and cause the tumbler to rub into the heating element and OUCH! These things will cause the motor to prematurely DIE! Its best to examine the dryers, rollers, and slides when you first hear the noise, but who does?

If Dryer does not tumble , check the following:

" It won't tumble If your dryer doesn't tumble, check these:

Belt
Motor
Door switch
Belt Dryers have a drive belt that turns the clothes drum. If the belt breaks, the drum stops rotating. Then you need to replace the belt, and often the idler pulley, because the pulley tends to wear out at the same time.

Click here for a belt installation diagram.

Motor If the dryer motor only hums when you press the Start button, the motor may be burned out. Here's how to test the dryer motor:

  • Remove the belt.

  • Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing.

  • Manually rotate the shaft of the motor.

If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor.

If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley, and then reassemble the dryer and try it again.

If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor.

Door switch Your dryer can't operate at all if the door switch is defective. It's inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it."Source Repaiclinic
