Question about Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor

1 Answer

I hit a rock and the mower engine stopped. Idisengaged the blades and restarted the mower and drove it over into the shade to nvestigage later. When aicame bqack several hours latter, the engine would not turn over. It seemed as if the batter was dead (The battery is only a year old and it started right up a few times that same day.) I put a charge on the battery overnight and tried again. The engine would no turn over--it rotated about once every 5 seconds as I held the ignition key down. In holding it down an extended period of time, with the engine truning ever so slowly, I started to smell smoke. When I looked I saw smoke coming from the bottom what looks to be the starter. I spoke with my buddy and he said to tap on the starte a couple of times with a wench, but not too hard. I did that and the engine turned around a lot quicker about 3 or 4 times. After that I could not get it to do it again, but it still smokes when I hold down the key. What do you suggest that I do? Replace the starter, as well as the blade(s)?

I think i know what is wrong ,its kind of strange that everything went bad just then, but if you were at full trottle when you hit that rock and it stalled the motoryou might have more damage then you think to find out take the spark plugs out and turn engine over if it turn quite fast with no problem then there shouldn't be anything wrong with the starter/battery you may have sheared the that keed the timing set to top dead center then you need to take it to the repair shop

Craftsman Model Number: 917.377151 motor shuts down when blades engaged

The engaging of the mowdeck is cause an excessive demand of your engine. From that, we can assume your problem is in the deck. Since the power drive is all about belts and it threw the belts, from your information I can only deduce that either an object (stick-wood-rock) has wedge into a position that has stopped rotation of the blades. Also, each blade has a pulley/spindle. These have bearings which must be free to rotate.
A bearing failure or seizing can also cause the problem you report.

Follow safety rules in your manual to insure the engine cannot start. Attempt to rotate each blade to check for free rotation. If the do not you most likely will need to remove the mower deck and check further. An obstruction or seized spindle should be easy to determine and sit repair is easily possible.

Mower hit a rock and won't start

On most push mowers, there is a "key" that is located on the end of the crankshaft, opposite end of the blade, that drives the flywheel. It's a small rectangle piece of metal that connects the two. When the inertia of the blade stops abruptly, the flywheel acts as a safety for the engine, and shears the key. Tools are made to remove the flywheel and videos online for repair assistance. Replacement keys are specific to the engine you are working on. Hope this helps!

I HIT A ROCK AND BENT THE BLADE NOW THE ENGINE HAS A MISS

You mean the engine is vibrating? It sounds like you bent the crankshaft. The cost of a new engine may outweigh your want to repair it. To be sure, take the blade off of the mower and start it up. If you still feel a vibration, then the crankshaft is no good.

The engine is not started

Hi.
Check the blade... it is bent and causes a vibration. if it is not the blade then the motor shaft is bent and that is terminal...if that happened then the mower is junk...

Unless the blade is belt-driven, like on riding mowers, then the blade is attached directly to the engine crankshaft. Hitting a rock with a mower like this is a very common problem. You probably have a bent crankshaft. In most cases this can be repaired, but may not be worth it, considering the age of the mower. But you should call a local small engine/mower repair shop to ask for an estimate. The repair is not something you would be able to do yourself.

The engine stalls

you may have trash in the gas tank. empty it nad wash it out real good make sure the gas you use is fresh the vibration could be the blade ; or it could be that when the rock was hit it bent the shaft and that would cause vibration also. remove the spark plug and rotate the blade with your hand, you should be able to tell ifi the shaft is bent or not if not try putting a new blade on

Mower hit a big rock and stoped running

If you hit something hard enough to partially shear the key on the blade adapter, you did shear the key on the flywheel, and it will need to be replaced for the engine to run properly.
