Question about Hayward Pro Series Sand Filter -36" Tank

1 Answer

My pro series plus, model 360sx was filtering sand back into the pool. Thought we had a broken lateral. After removing all sand and inspecting, can't find any broken or cracked pieces and are at a loss why it was putting sand in pool. Any thoughts?

As far as the pressure gauge goes on these pool filters, those work for a short amount of time then they go bad. I would have to ask you two questions. Do you have good strong suction from the skimmer? Do you have a strong flow from the return? If the answer to both of these questions is yes then I don't think you have a problem other than a bad pressure gauge. Also you said the pressure is the same but you did not mention if it is still spitting out sand. If it is and the laterals are all ok I would recommend replacing the spider gasket.

Sand coming into pool when set on filter and when back wash and rinse? How do I stop this?

Sand can be sent to the pool for several reasons. If it is piped in reverse, if the laterals, their manifold, pipes connected to the manifold is damaged or there is a problem in the backwash valve. The water from the filter enters the filter above the sand where it soaks through the sand, through the laterals and out the return pipe to the filter. If the water is flowing from the pool into the laterals and through the sand and into the pool some sand will go with the water into the pool. In addition, the laterals will get filled with dirt from the pool. The best way to know if there is a damaged lateral, manifold or pipe is to remove most of the sand and inspect these parts. After the filter is worked on, If some sand was in the laterals, manifold or pipes when a system is started it should be sent into the pool and find can then be brushed into the main drain and be caught in the filter. I hope this helps.

Sand from my sand filter is going into the pool. I have a S 244T

Inside the sand filter there are laterals that are PVC pipes with many narrow slots along their length. If a lateral is broken then sand will not be stopped by the lateral. Another possibility is that the part these laterals screw into is broken and sand leaks through. I hope this helps.

I am having sand in my pool. I vaccuum pool and within 30 minutes, it looks like I haven't cleaned it. Filter is only 3 yrs old and last year I inspected laterals for the same problem but they were...

If you have sand in the pool and you are sure you didnt take it in on your feet, there is problem with one or more laterals, or there could be trouble with the little hose. When you refilled the sand did you first fill the filter with about one foot of water to protect the laterals? Is the little hose up in the top where it is suppose to be? The purpose of the little hose is to remove the air. If the hose is in the sand (or missing), sand can get into the pool this way too.

I hope this helps you ...

I have an older Hayward pool filter. Is there a link to dowload instructions for replacing or adding sand to the filter?

Here is how I do it. Open the top. Open the drain on the bottom to allow the water out. Remove the plastic water difusser on the top. With a small can, scoop out the sand. When you get to the laterals, remove them for inspection. The sand below the laterals if fine, it does not need to be removed. Put the plug back in. Replace any laterals that may be broken (probably none) Fill the filter with water to about 6 inches above the laterals ... maybe more. The water will protect the laterals from the new sand as you fill the filter. It will also help the sand to pack in around the laterals. Continue filling until you are about 3 inches below the difusser that will go on the top. Make sure you don't bury the little black hose. The purpose of the little black hose is to remove the air from the filter during operation. The hose should ultimately stick up into the inside of the top (cover). I think your filter takes about 300 # of sand. Double check with your professional pool supplier where you purchase your sand. I normally will fill the filter with water before I replace the top. You may want to put on a new "O" ring too ...

This new sand should last you at least 4 to 5 years in non commercial use. After that time, you may want to replace the top 4 inches with new sand.

Sand Leaking From Filter into Pool. When my filter is running I am experiencing sand in the bottom of my pool from the filter. What can be causing that?

There is only one thing that can cause sand to come back into the pool from a sand filter. The internal assembly, called the lateral assembly, is either cracked or broken. This is an easy fix and should cost you around $70 to replace the whole thing. You need to unscrew the bottom drain cap on the filter to remove the water in the tank. Then, remove the multiport valve on top of the filter. Take a shop vac and remove the sand in the filter. If the sand hasn't been replaced in the last 3-5 years, this would be a great time to do that since you already have the sand out anyway. Then, remove the lateral assembly and inspect the entire thing. After you replace the lateral assembly, you'll need to fill the sand filter tank 1/2 full of water before adding fresh sand. This is done to cushion the laterals from the weight of the sand. Cover the hole in the top of the lateral assembly pipe with a cup or duct tape to prevent any sand from getting inside the pipe (the sand will come out into the pool if it gets into the pipe). Fill the tank 3/4 full of pool filter sand. Make sure it is genuine silica pool filter sand from a pool company. A lot of big box and home improvement stores sell play sand as filter sand. This will cause you more problems!

Hello, when i vacuum my inground pool using a hayward filter....it cleans the pool but the next day sand forms on the bottom of the pool...this was a constant problem last year....what may be causing this?...

If sand is getting back into the pool, the strainer in the filter is broken or out of place. The filter has to be disassembled, sand must be removed and the strainer must be inspected for cracks or leakage. New parts are available from most pool supply stores.

I replaced the sand in the pro series high rate sand filter im getting sand back in the pool?

Above is the link to all hayward sand filter manuals, with parts diagrams.
The most common cause of sand getting through after a change-out, is a broken lateral. The laterals at the bottom of the filter are very fragile, and prone to breaking. When refilling the filter with sand, it should be 3/4 of the way filled with water first to take weight of of the lateral grid. One other possibility is the air bleeder line has come undone. Regardless of which one it is, you will have to go back in and find out.

Use the above link to the parts diagram to identify and order any parts neccessary. Laterals are cheap, so if your doing one of them, you might as well do all of them.

Why does my hayward pro series s244s blow out sand when the filter is put on, and has little to no pressure?

This indicates that one or more of the laterals are cracked or broken. You will need to open the tank, remove all the sand, inspect the laterals(tubes that come off the center 'stand pipe'). replace any that have cracks or are broken. If you can't tell, replace them all. Fill tank back up with the right amount of sand and close it all back up.

My swimming pool filter returns dirty water to the

Might you have a broken lateral in the bottom of your filter and what you are seeing is sand coming into the pool?

Do you backwash daily or more often? (You should) Do you have a multi-port vavle or other type?

Im thinking broken lateral. Sucking air in and of itself will not cause dirt to return to the pool.

Whats a lateral? There is a series of pipes in the bottom of the sand with small holes in them. These holes allow water to travel in and out depending on whether you are filtering or back washing ... but not sand. If you have sand, you have a broken pipe.

Open the filter and remove the sand into a bucket to inspect the laterals.

I hope this works for you.
