Do you want to connect to a wireless computer from your dell which is connected via cable?

all you need is an ethernet cable plug one end into your pc and the other end into one of the router ports

  • Martin Murray Apr 11, 2011

if the distance is a long way from the pc to the router , or the cable will look unsightly or in the way , then why not just buy a wireless usb adapter to plug into your dell and therefore make the dell able to connect to your wireless network?

Need to connect reurbished dell GX520 to existing internet

first connect the "cat 5" cable to the dell's network card, the card has a square-ish hole with a little "cutout" in the top (for the cable's connector tab) the other end of the "cat 5" cable goes into the back of the router (you do have an existing router?) into one of the un-used square-ish holes (same cutout for the tab).
Then turn on the computer, see if the computer will "connect" to the router (that means it sees the router in computer-ish software).
IF that works then connect the router to the Modem (supplied by the "Internet Provider"... Then turn on the modem....

IF all goes well, your computer will now be able to connect to the existing internet.

Now for problems...

IF it seems to be connected correctly using the proper cat 5 cable, and it still will not work... turn off everything, start with the internet modem, then the router, then the computer... COUNT to 30 (1, 2, 3, 4... 29, 30) turn on the internet modem... count to 90 (1,2,3,4...90) turn on the router... count to 30 (1,2,3,4...30) turn on the computer... wait for it to fully boot, look down at the lower right of the screen and see if it can connect now.

IF it still doesn't connect, you may have to try another network card in the computer, or get a wireless USB "thingy" to connect to a wireless router...

Hope this helps...

I have a Dell optiplex gx260 and the Ethernet controller isn't working. What can I do to fix that? My email is suge167@yahoo.com. All positive feedback is very appreciated. Thanks!!

Try this:
Click on the Operating System from the list below that is on the computer you are trying to connect to your network with a network cable.

<p>Dell Support could not identify your operating system.</p>
new_note.jpg Note: If you are on another computer and need to know what Operating System is installed on the computer you are trying to connect to your wireless network, press and hold the Windows Logo key i_port_qh_ubuntu_windows%20button_1a.jpg then press the <Pause> or <Break> key (on notebooks it may necessary to press and hold the <FN> key before pressing the Pause or Break key). The System Properties window will open and the Operating System is listed.

Try to use a known good ethernet cable. Check if lights at the ethernet card is lit up. check also on router if the indicator light will lit up when you connect the ethernet cable.

    Wireless router

You need a network card that is functioning to connect to anything.
If your network card in the desktop stops functioning, you will need to replace it (or, if it's built into the motherboard, add a card).
Unless you have a wireless card also installed, you cannot connect wirelessly.

I am trying to connect to a wireless internet network

If you have Wireless networks available, and you just need a network adapter for the system, here is a good suggestion:

The adapter connects to the system via USB, and setup is pretty simple
