To make your network secure, you need to first access routers page. To do that, open Internet Explorer and type this 192.168.0.1 and press enter. You will see login screen which will ask you to enter username and password. I am assuming you never set one, so password should be blank. On the router page, click on Wireless Setup. On that page, scroll down and you will see wireless network name. Enter the name you want for you WIFI. Check the button "Manual assign network key" also check use WPA encryption instead of WEP which will make your wireless more secure. On the next page, it will ask you to enter a WPA key (which is your wireless password). and click on Save. Your router will reboot. Thats it.
Now, as you have change the name of your wireless and set a password, you need to update the same in devices connected with your router. Say, you gotta laptop connected with your router wirelessly, you need to configure wireless on it again. To do that, search the wireless network, select your network, enter the password and thats it.

How do I prevent my neighbor from using my wireless router?

If you do not have any wireless network security enabled on the router, your neighbor can see this SSID and connect to the network without authorization. While this is generally frowned upon as being unethical, it is technically not illegal as you have "made the network available" by failing to secure it. The easiest way to secure the network is through the use of a WEP key or a WPA pass-phrase. WEP keys are generally 5, 10, 13 or 26 randomly generated characters long. WPA pass-phrases are just that - a phrase such as "The sun is yellow". Either method will prevent unauthorized users from accessing your network. Only those individuals who possess the key or pass-phrase are granted access.

These options is located under the Wireless > Wireless Security tabs from within the router administration. After login you can change the password.

How do I go back and set up a security password so the neighbors can't use my wireless service? Router has been set up for years.

Go to your IP Adress (printed below your router, usually 192.168.0.1) enter the user credentials (commonly admin/password) and go to router security. If this is to complicated or you don't remember credentials, reset the router or tell the neighbors that you will sue them

I need to put a security code on my wireless router so my neighbors cant use it but i am unsure how to do this.

Use the cd that came with the Router. Run the cd like you did when you first got it. You should come to a point where it recommends a WPA security. Click it. Then you just have to create a password. Complete the rest of the setup. Then you will have to go to any device connected through the router and put in the password. That should keep your neighbor from leeching off you.

Well, I bought this to take to public places with Wi-Fi. Will it work there? Also, I don't have wi-fi at home but my friend uses her laptop at my house saying it probably works because a neibor has Wi-Fi....

It should work fine if the public places have open (non-secure) WI-FI. Try it at your local library.
I would not use your neighbor non-secure WIFI since it can be trace back to you and it is not fair to use your neighbor for free unless you ask your neighbor or offer to share the cost which is probably the best thing to do to reduce the cost.

Can I connect my ps3 to the internet using a secured connection from my neighbor with no router?

If you mean, can you use your neighbor's wireless with your PS3, then yes. Potentially. First, you'll want to have the permission of your neighbor, for legal reasons. Not to mention if their wireless is Secured, your going to need their assistance in connecting the PS3 to that router. If you have their blessing, then just follow the steps on the PS3 to set up a connection, and have your neighbor in the room or on the phone to give you the information when you need it.

If your trying to get access without them knowing, don't bother. If the connection is secure, your gonna waste a lot of time for nothing.

About 1 yr ago, I allowed my neighbor to connect w/my linksys router. Now, our IPS has instituted a "fair access policy," and I need to remove my neighbor from my network. Can u tell me how to do this?

Change the WEp/WPA security key and don't let eh neighbor have it. That will kick him out of the router. You could also go into the router table and look at the MAC address associated with his IP and block that IP address and that will kick him out as well. If you block his IP and your router is set for DHCP he can log out and log back in and get a new IP address. Blocking by MAC address and using WEP/WPA security key is the best way to block unauthorized access to your router. The WEP/WPA key will be located on the page that router Wireless Security settings are on when you access your router.

I want to stop my neighbors from using my router/modem, can you help me?

Hello

All you need to do is to to enable the router security, which will enable you to add a password.

HERE is how you do it:
Type 192.168.0.1 (this will get you in your router) and once you're in, go to the "Security" tab or option and click on WEP or WPA, select the encryption, choose a password and click save or apply.

Hope this can be of help.

Kind regards
Andrea

to secure the wireless network , you will need to access the router set up.
You said that you tried all the links like 192.168.1.1, but nothing is working.
Did you check the IP address on the computer ?
First check the IP address on the computer and Default gateway number.
Default gateway will be the number that you will use to open the set up.

Log on to the routers interface . Under wireless you will have the options to enable security. You will have to put in a passkey in the router and use the same one while connecting from the computer .
