How to format/install SATA 2TB hard drive (BARRACUDA) in Gateway GT5098E, Win XP Media Center Edition 2005?

Windows XP doesn't support SATA. You will need to use a program such as Nlite to integrate sata drivers into a new Windows XP disc. Once you have a disc with sata drivers just boot to the disc and follow the prompts to format the drive.

Windows xp is not starting

Windows XP is a fairly stable and secure operating system, but errors and other problems will occur from time to time. Unfortunately, some of these errors can damage or corrupt important system files and can lead to Windows XP not booting up correctly. You can repair your Windows XP installation using a process known as a "repair install," overwriting the damaged system files with new versions from your Windows XP installation disc. The repair install process takes approximately one hour, though a large portion of this time will not require any input from you.

1,Start your computer and place the Windows XP installation disc in the drive. If the computer is crashing upon attempting to boot, allow it to restart; otherwise, reboot the computer manually.
2.Press a key to boot from the Windows XP CD if prompted to do so when the computer attempts to boot again. If you are not prompted to boot from the CD, restart the computer again and press the indicated key on the initial BIOS screen to access the "Boot Order" or "Boot Sequence" menu. Select the CD or DVD drive containing the Windows XP installation CD, then press a key when prompted to boot from the disc.
3.Press the "Enter" key on the initial Windows XP welcome screen and press "Enter" again to begin setting up Windows XP. Do not press the key indicated to launch the "Recovery Console," as the Windows XP recovery console is not used to repair corrupted XP installations.
4.Accept the user agreement and wait while the setup program scans your hard drive.
5.Press the "R" key when the Windows XP setup program lists the installed version of XP that it detected to begin the repair installation. If you have more than one version of Windows XP installed, make sure that the proper version is listed before pressing "R."
6.Wait while the Windows XP setup program copies files to your hard drive and begins the installation process. The installation will take 45 minutes or longer, depending on the speed of your computer, during which time all of the Windows XP system files will be overwritten.
7.Confirm your user information as well as the date and time settings on your computer, and enter your Windows XP product key when prompted. Allow the operating system to connect to the Microsoft authentication servers to activate itself.
8.Reinstall any hardware drivers and XP Service Packs that you had previously installed, as your copy of Windows XP will have reverted to the basic installation you had when it was first installed.

I hope you find it very helpful.

How to reformat back to windows vista ?

You need a windows Vista disc. Insert the disc and follow the prompts. I would format the hard drive instead of upgrading do a new install. The best way would be to go into your bios and make sure the boot device order has the cd-rom booting before the hard drive. Then put the disc in and start the computer, when it says press any key to boot from cd hit any key and let it load and then follow the prompts to install.

How can I get a document typed on windows 98 3.5 disk converted for windows XP? Or, saved to a surf drive J: driver

1. Your not converting from Win98 to XP.
2. You ARE converting from one application to another.
The extension of the old file would be very useful. Or better what application was the file typed in?

You had to use windows 98 and some application like Word or Excel.
It being that old, may have been wordperfect, wordstar or even lotus 123.
Heck it could have been notepad.
The good news, M$ word and Excel have a rather large conversion success on older formats. Be warned the conversion is not always pretty or exactly like the original.

Open it with the XP appropriate application.
Word document "Resume.doc"
Excel Spreadsheet "Resume.xls"
Power point "Resume.ppt"

Word processor or simple text program try M$ Word
Spreadsheet type program try Excel
Drawing or chart type program try Powerpoint
GUESS! sometimes you get lucky. :)

Oh and turn the file extensions on.
Some madman at M$ decided it was not good to show these extensions and only that lowly icon file. Now the lemmings don't know WHERE the files goes or what the extension is. Two very valuable bits of information.

IF your asking how to get the file off the disk.
You'll need a 3.5 disk drive and that (1.4 meg disk or 720K disk) which ever it may be. Copy to a memory stick, CD or network drive if you have one available. If you only have the Floppy disk. You may be able to snag an old 3.5 disk drive from a local repair shop. Probably have a lot of them they wish to get rid of. Memory sticks are slowly driving them to extinction. The 3.5 disk drive is very easy to install.

Good luck!

Don't buy computers with Windoze Vista on them, go to your local shop and get them to build you one with XP on it. XP will be around for a long time at least to 2014. Vista is junk, always will be.

Sorry mate i dont understand all you have written, but this is what i use as nero wont copy most films and just wastes the discs, to copy them you need nero installed, then download a free program called dvd shrink which can be found on google. run dvd shrink put film in drive, click open disc select film, then click backup will rip it to drive then spits out disc and you put in blank and it should work fine. Hopefully this is problem you are having. All the best John
