Question about Westinghouse LTV-27w7 7 in. LCD HDTV

1 Answer

When i turn on the tv the blue power light comes on-in aprox. 2 sec. a series of colored lines appear at the left side of the screen [aprox. 4 to 8 ins.] with faint vertical lines in the whole screen. then the screen goes to gray with min. lines in the upper left of the screen. in aprox. 15 sec. the screen goes black and the amber power light appears. I have tried a flashlight st see if there is any kind of immage- nothing appears/ No visable signs of any dammage to any of the boards. ????

This sounds like a bad LCD Controller Board (otherwise known as a TCon board), but you would have to replace it with a new one to be sure.

Here is one available on EBay for about $76 if you were interested in doing the work yourself:

http://cgi.ebay.com/WESTINGHOUSE-LTV-27W7HD-T-CON-BOARD-V270B1-L01-C-/160414559619?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item255973ed83

A repair shop could also do the work for you as but they would probably charge you at least $100 labour plus the cost of parts for that kind of job.

These boards are a common source of problems for these TVs, so you will have to carefully weigh the cost benefits of spending money on a tech or on swapping out circuit boards yourself, versus the purchase price of a brand new TV that comes complete with a warranty.

Here is a link to another expert's solution which contains links to his excellent set of LCD Troubleshooting Guides:

http://www.fixya.com/support/t8133519-not_power_up

You can read through them and get an idea of what the repair procedure would involve. If you find BUDMRTN's guides helpful, please give him a thumbs up on that page.

Please comment back here to this page if you have any questions, have difficulty accessing the links, or just require further general assistance and I will respond as soon as I see it.

Thank you very much and good luck.

Joe.

No difference really, just the TCon board part number will be different.

I looked on EBay for one, but I did not see any for that model available at the time. I will keep an eye out for one and post back if I find another source. The second hand / refurbished part market supply changes all the time so you just have to keep looking sometimes.

    My mistake, here's a few:

    http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trk...

    The part number is V320B1-C03.

DO NOT buy any that say "AS IS" for their description of condition. This is EBay speak for broken.

On the right side of the tv aprox.3-4 inches wide down verical its black. It`s like the screen shifted left??

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Blue Vertical Line

It is sounding like when the laptop is turned on and heats up a bit, the line appears? Sounds like one of the panels is going bad or atleast has developed a problem. below are some tricks you can try to lessen the annoyance of the line. Dual-Scan STN displays are composed of 2 panels behind a single protective panel or screen. Because you are looking through the protective screen the display appears to be one large panel even though it is not. There is a physical separation line (gap) at the point where the two panels meet. When the computer is on and being viewed it is not unusual to see the visible separation line with the Dual-Scan STN displays. The line, actually the fine gap between the display panels, appears because the color and light pixels cannot run along the very outside edges of the panels. This line (gap) between the panels can be seen as a fine gray line and is most noticeable when viewing on a screen with a white or light background. Note the line may not be as noticeable when the screen is displaying certain colors or darker backgrounds. SUGGESTIONS: It is not possible to completely eliminate the line but there are some things you can try to reduce it's visibility. 1) Lower the display brightness/contrast. The brighter the backlight the more noticeable the line. 2) Use Wallpapers and Screen savers that use darker colors. 3) In the Control Panel/Display applet under appearance try different combinations of color schemes for your Window and Background choice Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
