This would depend on which OS you are trying to install. Also, if the system booted before and you are receiving this message you probably have a bad hard drive or corrupted system files. There are free operating systems out there such as Unix and Linux, or you can go through Microsoft and get the OEM disc for your preferred operating system. If you do not want to puchase the OEM disc yourself then you can also go through a pc repair shop and have them do an OS reinstall. Hope this helps, let me know if I can assist you with anything else.

When i start my computer a message came that 'disk

No your operating sytem or boot files have a problem. Something is missing or corrupt in the operating system or boot files.

Try the steps below.

You will need a operating system disk or a repair disk to fix it. Insert it in the drive then boot from it. You want to get to a dos command prompt (black screen with white lettering) and type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

Reboot and see if the problem is solved. If not get back to the dos command prompt and run the check disk utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to completion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows. Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when the options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

"disk boot failure, insert system

You should have a recovery cd, it will allow you to reinstall Windows. If you don't have even that then either borrow one from a friend and use it with you key (the one on the sticker), or order a new disk by following this

I have a compaq, windows xp and the screen is black saying DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER, and the only options i can do is boot menu and setup and i don't know what else to do to...

open cpu and reconnect both connection to harddisk power cable and sata ir ide cable.
When u power up the computer press F1 or F2 or 'del" key to enter in bios then check your harddisk is detected .
This error comes when yourr hardidisk is not detected properly.
So detect your harddisk then check.

Compaq Presario Disk Boot Failure, insert sytem disk and press enter

If you have your original Windows install disk, you can boot off of that, and should be able to recover most of your files, assuming your drive has not died fully. Depending on how important your files are, you can send the drive to a drive recovery service. I did that a couple years ago, they were able to recover all my files but it was EXPENSIVE. $1200.
