Question about Sony CASSETTE DECK Single Dual Cassette Deck

1 Answer

I have a sony TC-W2 tape deck. It had a bad belt on the A side and while working on it I discovered that the A side motor runs as long as the power switch is on. I obtained a service manual and it appears to me that power is on the A side motor as long as it os powered on. Is this really normal or am I missing something? --- Bert

Many of the cassette decks from the mid 1980s were designed this way. Yes this can be normal.

How do I fix this?

The mechanisms in both units need cleaning and lubrication. There is no simple answer than to clean out the old Lub and apply a new grease. Sometimes belts are also changed but belts by themselves will do little good.

Tape transport failure on tc-366, motor noise but no tape movement

These units are mechanically in need of a good cleaning and application of new grease in the slide plate mechanism. The Play idler that was in the last one i rebuilt was sent off to Terry'srubberrollers.com to have it get new rubber on it. There is certainly a lot of work to be done on these units but they can be made to work again. Personally though, I would just get a Teac A2300S or SX and use that as the overall maintenance and longevity will be better in the long run. I have serviced hundreds of them and I still do. The design of the Teac is not so much dependent on all kinds of mechanical parts as the Sony is. The last TC366 I worked on took about 4 to 5 hours to correct all it's problems. Then when you are done you still have a lever activated deck where the Teac is a solenoid deck with remote capability. I worked at both Sony factory Service and Teac Factory Service so I have had experience in each item.

Stuck head unit-- need help understanding the mechanics of a tape deck.

The solution to the problem comes from recognizing the type of transport the unit uses. This can be discovered by looking at the working side or by a person who has some experience working on these. Chances are there is a stuck flywheel assist mechanism and just because the belts are no broken or not turned to goo, that does not mean they are good. Also does the capstan motor turn? If it does not, there is no way the mechanism can right itself and that might mean a new capstan motor. Dual cassette decks were built for profit not for a long lasting unit- that is why the thrift shops should be full of them and why most of them will not work.

Belt replacement in a sony tc-wr645s tape deck

I have just spent half a day trying to replace the drive belts in my sony twin deck unit , in the end it still didnt work as the the old rubber belt did some damage to the unit , anyway shops like **** smith or tandy stock the drive belts , take the front of the unit away from the main case there will be a plastic casing that surrounds the belts there are at least two belts, there should only be two small screws undo these and move the plastic unit forward on the plastic mounting brackets then you will see the metal wheel and the plastic wheel that you fit the belt around , its a bit fiddly but i can do it in my sleep now even though the motor died it was a good experience

Cassette Tape stuck

The problem here is that the unit is stuck in a partial position. The "reset" by unplugging and plugging back in usually causes the unit to reset to a known position. If there is no activity (no motor sound), it will need to be opened up and reset manually. If you hear the motor running for a short period, it is attempting to reset, but the belt is most likely worn or broken. These units are relatively simple, but a bit tricky to dis-assemble. This repair should not require anything other than a belt or 2. Figure on $3-$10 for parts plus the local labor rate for the repair.

Motor plays at a very slow speed

capstan belt may be failing. check this by removing lid and touch the capstan flywheel when running. if it is easily stalled/slow to come up to speed and or the belt slipping badly then belt will require replacement.
