The first step is to insert the Recovery disk and reboot the computer.
During the system post tap the F11 key .The key used to access the Boot Menu may vary. Some commonly used Boot Menu keys are F2, F10, F11, and ESC.
You should now see a Boot Menu.Use the arrow keys to select the CD/DVD Rom option from the menu and press Enter to accept. You can now proceed to boot Windows XP from the recovery disk.

How to use System Recovery console (steps)

Starting a Recovery

Turn on the computer and immediately begin pressing the F10 key repeatedly until a Recovery Screen appears.
You can also start a recovery from recovery discs, or from Windows. For more information refer to Performing a Full System Recovery in Windows XP .

Recovery is taking too long
If your computer stops responding after using the recovery program, do the following:

NOTE:If the computer appears to have stopped responding after restarting from a recovery, please wait, it may take several hours or longer to complete the initial Windows XP setup process, especially if a recovery was run from a recovery disc set sent by HP. A Standard recovery may also take longer, depending on how many files are stored in user accounts (like in My Documents ).

1 Exit the stalled recovery process by pressing the POWER button on the PC until the power turns off, this takes approximately five seconds.
2 Before recovering, disconnect personal media drives, printers, scanners, cameras, camera-type memory cards, and other devices that did not originally come with the PC.
3 If you are using recovery discs, be aware of the following items:
4 If you created the recovery discs using Recovery CD Creator, be sure to run the recovery from the same drive that you used to create the discs.
5 Clean the discs with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth wetted with distilled water. Wipe from the center of the disc to the outside edge. You may also use disc cleaning kits or disc restoration kits from your local computer store. These kits produce better results than using cloth and water.
6 You may also use available CD/DVD Drive cleaning kits to clean the laser reading lens of the CD or DVD drive.
Try running a full system recovery again from the hard drive by turning the on the computer and pressing the F10 key until a Recovery Screen appears. This performs the recovery from the hard drive.
7 If the recovery stops when recovering from the hard drive, use the section Disc errors occur during the recovery process to eliminate errors on the drive. Try recovering again after the disk errors are removed.

My apple mac laptop says the hard drive is full . How do I totally restore and start the system again?

Hi,
Depending on the version of OSx you have;

Pre 10.7 you are provided OSx Disks. Simply insert the Disk and the installer will appear on your screen, run through that, it will reboot and starup off the disk. At the option of installation destination you can change the option to erase the Hard Drive and install.

Post 10.7 you will need to restart/power on your mac and hold the Option key [left of the CMD key] and you will see your hard drive and a recovery partition. Same process after that..

Hope this helps :)

I have been trying to fix my brother in laws emachines desktop computer for 3 days now. It has Windows Vista and Intel Celeron D Processor 356. I used the recovery disc and the computer started working...

The disk is corrupted and it interferes with the install process. Just get this
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
boot from it and format your entire disk to reiserfs then to FAT32 - this way any trace of the old NTFS file system is thoroughly wiped. Now launch the recovery process one more time and it will automatically detect the FAT32 partition and will reformat it to NTFS in the process.

Want to restore HP Pavillion 505 N computer back to original

To do a system recovery without recovery disks (not all machines can perform this without recovery disks) press the power button and immediately keep tapping the F10 button until you enter the recovery console.

If unsuccessful, you will need to boot using the recovery disks that came with the machine.
  1. Place the first disk in the 1st CD tray (some machines may have multiple CD/DVD drives) and start up.
  2. Start the machine and immediately press ESC button to enter BIOS
  3. Select the drive the recovery CD is in
  4. Press Enter
  5. Once the machine boots off the recovery disk it will provide several options
  6. Press R for a standard recovery
  7. Press F for a "destructive" recovery (will wipe out and format hard drive)
  8. Press Q to quit
Once you've made your selection, the recovery process will automatically proceed. It may ask for additional recovery disks which have more software.

NOTE: if you are currently able to boot into the machine prior to recovery you should go in and back up any pertinent files. Both recovery options will wipe out personal files.

Compaq Presario Recovery needed??

If the compaq has not had the hard-drive altered, there is a restore partition. Normally you require recovery disks to start this process, but you can turn the computer on, and press F11 repeatedly to access the partition. I'm not sure what will happen without the recovery disks, but it's worth a try.
I am assuming the Compaq/HP system restore utility in Windows is long gone?

I am trying to delete everything on the hard drive and start over

It sounds like your recovery disk is damaged or scratched.
Hold the disk, data side up, and look for any small scratches or finger print smudges.
You can clean it with a soft cloth and warm water, by wiping from the inside out (don't wipe "around" the disk).
If it has scratches, you can find a disk repair device at most Audio / Electronics stores (like music stores) and try cleaning the scratches off that way.
If the damage is too severe, you may have to see if you can find a different recovery disk, or you may have to pruchase a copy of Windows to install.
