I'm currently having the same problem. The motor has been buzzing and clicking like a switch for the last two weeks. I unplugged it and cleaned the cooling fins underneath but that didn't fix it. Now I'm waiting on Sears to come out and diagnose it. The noise is loud enough to be heard throughout the house.I'm currently having the same problem. No it wont work, you can try replacing the overload relay assy mounted on the side of the compressor(football sized motor) behind refrig. i would check your manual for warr. information depending on age you may be covered for faulty compressor.

If the humming last 3-5 seconds then makes a faint click sound and stops humming for a minute or two. Then resumes the hum again it may be your compressor locked down. Stuck. Most likely it is just a bad start capacitor not kick starting the compressor. A $6 part.
As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong. If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.
If your refrigerator is running but warm, then…
Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...
Check to see if the
condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no
check fan.
Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should
be warm

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on
and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to
start.

yea that is the compressor relay, you will start to notice your food to thaw out and get bad. try to unplug for about an hour. if then it still does that call www.whirlpoolpartssurplus.com and get a relay kit.
The repair person came and in my case it was a start capacitator connected to the compressor. When he replaced the start capacitator the compressor came on immediately and started working. The charge $ 240 (Flat Rate) for the fix. The repair person told me its a universal start capacitator which I found online for $29. Worth trying to fix yourself before paying $240 if your a handy person.
It sounds like the condensor fan motor is seizing up. This is the fan that cools the compressor down. Does the outside of the fridge feel excessively hot to touch? Can you feel air being circulated under the fridge or behind the fridge? It could also be a faulty defrost timer. Try to identify where the buzzing is coming from and if it is the condensor fan you can put a normal standing fan behind the fridge, blowing onto the compressor untill the repairman can get to you.
