Question about Hitachi 50FX18B/19K 50" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

My Hitachi Mod # 50FX19K, Ser # V6H000056 Man Aug 1996 has a power problem. About a month ago it started turning off for no apparent reason after I was watching for an hour or so. I could turn it back on with no problem. That time period kept getting shorter and sometimes it would take 2 or 3 tries to get it to come on. Once back on it would play until I turned it off. Now it only stays on for about 30 seconds and I can't get it to restart. If I wait and hour or two it will come back on but only for 30 seconds.

I did not see any bulged capacitors on the main power board. There are red and green leds on this board. The green ones go off and I lose the sound and picture but the red ones remain on. I have to push the power button to turn the power off and the red leds go off, then push it again and both the red and green leds light up and the TV comes on for 30 seconds or so. There are so many capacitors on the main board, is there any specific area I should look?

I did not see any bulging caps. I did notice that the red led's on the board light up every time I turn the set on but the green led's do not light up. When the sound and picture does come on the green led's are lit. These green led's fade slowly and as they fade the picture and sound goes off.

There's a good chance you have failing electrolytic capacitors either in the power section or the inverter section or both.
Any caps in these sections that look bulged at the top, or bulged/leaking at the bottom need to be replaced.
If you repeatedly turn it on, eventually it'll probably stay on, but every time you turn it off, the TV will get harder and harder to start up until one day it just won't.
Sometimes you have to do the opposite to start it up and unplug it for an hour or two, then try.

If you aren't tech savvy, don't worry, read the rest of this solution and watch the videos.

If you are handy with a soldering iron and can identify the power supply and inverter / FM section for the backlights, an inexpensive handful of capacitors will likely fix you right up.
Match the capacitance on the capacitors. Go over voltage if you can, and still have them fit.
IE - it's not a bad idea to replace a 10V cap with a 16V or 25V or even a 50V, but don't replace a 680uF cap with a 500uF or a 1000uF (unless you are positive it's only doing ripple filtering, and even then, you should go OVER, not under the uF rating).

Most of the caps that go are 10V 1000uF or 3300uF.

I found some great videos of the procedure (for many Samsungs with the same issue) on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l0AUj8QUkg&NR=1&feature=fvwp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7b_nTaZYcU&feature=related

As you can see, this issue spans plasma TVs, as well as large and small LCD TVs and monitors.
The parts are cheap, and skill required is minimal.

It's a cap in the power supply failing...watch for drifting voltage on the outputs of the power supply, and trace them backwards towards the power input. The green LEDs are saying "power within tolerance", the red ones basically are "on/off".

///it's not what they REALLY mean, but in this scenario, it's how I want you to treat them, as it's what they are indicating at the moment.

Hello,

The issue you describe is consistent with a power supply board issue. This is the board where the AC goes to. This problem may have occurred as a result of irregular power supply, or excess power supply or power surge.

The TV is receiving current but cannot circulate or transfer the current to other necessary part of the TV because of the defective power supply board.

I do not think it needs replacement, rather some defective capacitors are causing this issue.
Open unit up and take a look at the power supply board. You will probably see one or more electrolytic filter capacitors that are bulged up in the top-not perfectly flat like the others. Or you can just go ahead and purchase a complete power supply board for the TV.

The value of these capacitors will be different, most likely they will be somewhere around-820 to 2200uF/25 V( or /10V sometimes)

You can replace them with same values but I would recommend the voltage rating to be higher(like 35V for an original 25V) for reliability purposes.

What happens is,these bulged top capacitors will cause a low and unfiltered DC voltage=main board will malfunction(the relay will keep clicking until the caps are holding enough charge to bring the voltage up over a threshold point).

You can buy these capacitors at any Fry's or Radioshack store or you can order them online at vendors like "mcmelectronics.com"(look for electrolytic capacitors).
After replacing these capacitor(capacitors) most likely the normal operation will be restored.

Note: There may be also some other causes for this symptom ,like a defective T con board ,or main board, but the bulged top capacitors are the most common cause for this issue.

If you don't know about TV repairers, take the TV to the nearest repairman to fix the fault for you. Also, note that TV stores a lot of current, so wait a while before opening the TV back cover.

I hope this helps.

Good luck.

Sounds like the problem started out with an intermittent solder connection possibly on the deflection PWB unless the power relay has a bad connection or is breaking down under load. If it is not the power relay, I would check the connections under the deflection board - paying close attention to the area from T701 and T752 including the Horizontal output Transistor for a short. You also have a possibility of defective filter capacitors causing the problem as well.

Hello Ron,

There might be a couple issues going on here.

First off, your flame sense is not working like it should. This is the electrode that partially sits in the burner flame. There is a wire that goes back to the ignitor module. Check it for continuity (electrode to connector), it should be near zero ohms. Also, check the screws on the burner housing assembly. These need to be tight and rust free because they secure the ground path for the ignitor. Make sure that your ground wires are clean and tight.

Given the history of the electric side, your power supply board may be on its way out as well. This can affect both modes (electric and gas, as well as 12volt cooling - but you are not equipped for that).

You can find a service manual at bryantrv.com. Look under the service manuals section, find the link for norcold 600
