Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

I have a GSS22JEPA WW fridge in my rental. I have had a repair guy come to the house several times and $800 later, the fridge still does not work. He replaced the compressor, the control board, then he found that the damper door was not opening. I replaced this part myself. There is no real troubleshooting going on, just a repair guy throwing parts at my fridge. After replacing the damper door, I can manually open the door but it will automatically close. The freezer section works good, it freezes food and makes ice. I need to find out where the damper door gets its power from. If the damper door has power to close, it should have power to open; unless it is a "fail safe" circuit which causes the door to close when it has no power.

This could be a sensor issue , that is what i would be changing in the first instance. The sensor connects into the same connector the vent door connects into.

This damper is controlled by the main board of the fridge in most cases.
Testing should have been conducted to see if voltage was being applied to the "stuck" damper.
It may, in fact, be doing exactly what it's told.

Reply with the model # and I can give you a definitive answer.

Hello Rene,

Have you run a test/diagnostic on this unit to verify thermistors are good and the damper is indeed opening and closing proper ? What about the temp in the freezer.

I know you mentioned the fresh food section is not cold enough, but what about the freezer ? Obviously if it is not colling sufficiently it's not going to be sufficient for the top either.

If you're open to it I'd suggest you try the test cycle. To do so is as follows on the "LFX" series LG fridge.

Damper is open, but still very little air. WHY? If the damper is open then air should flow properly through vents. If the air is low/little then fan is weak. Its running but its speed is slow. The fan motor needs replacement.----------- Other thing is main control board.I agree its new and replaced. But is it opening the damper properly. It should open.If not, then its quite possible that new main control board is faulty.Get it replaced.---------- The control board sends voltage to the damper assembly to cause it to open or close. If the damper fails and doesn't open the temperature in the refrigerator gets warm.---------- ------------ Another possibility is the evaporator coil in the freezer gets coated with frost and doesn't let the cold air circulate into the refrigerator. You can look at the evaporator coil in the rear of the freezer section and see if it is covered with frost and ice. You can turn the refrigerator off and defrost the evaporator coil with a hair dryer. If this causes the refrigerator to get cold, the defrost heater or defrost thermostat might be bad.--------- You can also try manual defrost procedure if you see ice getting collected on the evaporator coils in the freezer section:---

. The manual defrost reset procedure is as follows : ----
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. If the same problem occurs then it's defrost problem. -----------

If it's again building up ice that means the unit is not defrosting. It's starting the cooling procedure, and then while defrosting, it's not working. The defrost assembly consists of three main parts. The defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and defrost board. Any of the one is not functioning. When thermostat sense the maximum cooling, it triggers the defrost heater to start heating and this defrosts the ice collected on the coils and the system works. Both thermostat and heater are controlled by defrost board. First the thermostat and defrost heater to be checked, if both check ok by meter and visually, then its defrost board causing the problem. You can get required parts from online sites like: --- or from searspartsdirect online site.

------------------ This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Water dispenser doesn't work, side by side, model # GSS22JEPA BB

At the bottom of the freezer door ( remove the kick plate ) , there will be a water line . Follow this line , about 6 " to a connector . Push in on the white ring and pull out the line , at the same time . Activate the water dispensor pad and see if water flows from the line under the refrig . If it does , then the line in the door is frozen . Either raise the freezer temp for several days , so the line in the door will thaw , or , I have heard using an air tank will blow the ice out of the line in the door . If no water comes from the line under the refrig , while activating the pad , then replace the water valve , behind the refrig , the piece the wall water line connects to on the refrig .

Very common. Most likely you need a main control board, located in the back of the fridge.

Freezer and Frig not cooling. Lights on and Ice dispenser works. Unplug refrig and plug it back in and all seems to work for awhile. This has happened several times in the last year.

I had a similar issue with my fridge and it turned out to be a fried circuit board caused by overheating. I was instructed by the repair guy to pull the fridge further away from the wall to avoid this and to keep the back of the fridge clean of dust.

Fortunately, the repair was covered under my home warranty and only cost $60.

Fridge and freezer stopped working.Power still on (light on in fridge). Digital control for fridge and freezer shows straight line no numbers. Any suggestions?

The double dashes in your display are for one of two reasons. First situation would be would be "you turned the unit off". Press the up arrow on the feezer or fresh food control until a 4 is in each display. Second, if the control is locked out, the board has been scrambled or failed possibly from a power surge. Unplug unit for 30 seconds, and plug it back in and try to set control's for "4". If controls are still locked out, the board (12868513) needs to be replaced.

Refrigerator not cold enough

You may need to check to make sure the drain pan below the fridge is emptied and cleaned out. another thing to do is clean off any cooling fins under or behind the fridge.

Another thing is do you hear the fan running at all? One time I found a plastic sack caught into the fan, and that burnt it out.

If nothing else, you might need to see if the compressor is working correctly.

Good luck.

Ridge not cooling

Check the controls to see that it is set for cold. But I'm sure you already did this. There could be an electrical part that failed during the move. This would not be too expensive to repair, but this is not very likely. It might be worth $50 to have it diagnosed.
More likely, the compressor lost its oil and will not turn any more. Or, something caused a Freon leak, and there's no coolant left. The repair could be as much as $500 - $800. Unless your fridge is worth more than $1000, plan to get another fridge.

Good luck!
