That's not any Windows feature I've ever hear of. I think you have a virus. Try starting in Safe Mode and running a virus scan.

Why do I have to go through the Start, Shut Down, process twice before my computer will shut down?

keeping it updated dont mean you dont have one when your computer dont shut down there is a parasite program keeping it on you need to check it, anti virus protection only protects against known viruses not one that has not been detected yet, once one is found then a program is made to fight and delete it, not before

Turns off suddenly

Laptop turns off suddenly? Computers may not be smarter than people, but if they’re designed properly, they will shut themselves down before overheating to the extent that they do themselves damage.

If the smart person keeps turning the notebook back on and figures out a way to foil the protection, the laptop is probably doomed.

Once a laptop shuts down for thermal event protection, it may refuse to power back up for a fixed period of time, five or ten minutes, or it may begin to boot and shut down immediately as soon as it boots to the point that it can figure out that its too hot.

The over-temperature protection is generally a BIOS rather than an operating system function, so one sign of an overheated laptop is one that shuts itself down while you’re using it and then refuses to boot as far as the operating system unless you leave it alone for an hour or so to cool down.

Unless you’ve been working in a very unfriendly environment, high temperatures, direct sunlight, etc, you should take even a single overheating shutdown as a warning to back up your data at the first opportunity and to give the cooling system a serious cleaning.

My sisters A205-S5804 laptop keeps shutting down but only when it's processing files..If it's idle it sits there for hours

it may be overheating, when it processes files the proc gets hot i suggest a cooling pad of some type see if that helps, when it shuts down, is it hot? are you getting any messages or does it just shut down. try this: hit windows key +R and when the box pops up type eventvwr and check the system logs and see if it tells you why it's shutting down. if it's heat related it should say. let me know if you need any help

My Toshiba m205 4806 shuts down spontaneously. The lap top feels warm but the fan is running. any suggestions?

The cpu get overheated and will shtdown to protect it. The fan continues to run until a CPU safe temperature is reached / sustained.

1. Use laptop on flat surface, not on pillow, carpet, bed, etc. that will restrict air flow. Using a can of compressed air, clear the air vents.

2. If the symptom continues, then the heat conductive paste between the cpu chip and the heatsink is no longer effective (hardened, too thin, etc.). Remove the heatsink and add thermal paste
($6 Radio Shack).

Try to boot the computer into safe mode. If that can be done, uninstall Goofle Earth, and get into the system restore and restore the computer back before the Google install and reboot normally.

Laptop shuts down

My Wife's computer started doing this for about a week or two, then all it did was keep trying to boot, nothing on screen, all lights come on. Seems there is an issue with certain models of compaqs and Hp laptops. If yougo to their website and chat with a rep, you may find you have one of these models they are giving a one time free fix, even if out of warranty.
They have ours right now.

My compaq presario R4000 just stopped working and shut down - no warning - nothing!

bad battery. best way to kill a battery is to always have it charging and never using it or discharging it.

take the battery out and use it just with power cord, see if it shuts down again. or try to use it with JUST the battery if battery is bad the PC will not turn on or stay on

Computer will not shut down

You can try the Ctl-Alt Del keys to see if you can get the task manager to come up. If you can then try to shut down using that. If not then the only choice you really have is to manually power down and restart. Chances are pretty good Windows will clean up after itself and should boot backup. During the process if you receive any error messages or warnings document them. Windows may also prompt you for a hard drive scan, let it. Let us know what happens and please don?t forget to rate this post.
