In 2008 I bought the Memoirs model that Lowe's was selling. I've had multiple tank/bowl gasket leak problems. When I went to get a replacement gasket this weekend, Kohler had changed the style of the tank/bowl gasket assembly in the current Memoirs model that Lowes sells. I wonder if this is because the old gasket assembly is known to be defective and prone to leaking?

When I called Kohler, it took two customer service associated, but I was granted a WHOLE NEW TOILET with the new style of tank/bowl gasket assembly. I just had to have the receipt for the (3 yrs ago) purchase. Kohler e-mailed a letter for a replacement toilet within about 15 minutes and before the end of the day, I had a whole new toilet in my bathroom.

I'm not a contractor. Just an average homeowner, so I can't say for sure that the old style (large, black, plastic rectangle on the bottom of the tank and a rather thin gasket ring) was defective or not. (At first Kohler offered only a replacement tank, but after hearing the number of times both I *and* plumbers have replaced the gasket, they did authorize the replacement of the entire toilet.)

Toilet tank leaking

Hello David McInnis,

There are Three basic opportunities for leaks from the classic TOILET TANK DESIGN (separate BASE & top-tank)... around the FLAPPER VALVE alone... Typically the flapper valve & two hold-down screws. These CANNOT be repaired without removing the entire tank. GREAT CARE should be used to not FRACTURE
the mated surfaces by OVER-TIGHTENING.

This is a great time to FRESHEN UP all the
Perishable gaskets & seals... and while I NEVER advocate using any ABRASIVES on gloss finishes... Pumas stone seems to be the FINAL TOUCH in a total renewal
(to REMOVE the built up (very unsightly
TOILET BOWL RING...

ADDITIONAL PARTS:
- Water fitting to FILL VALVE (compression fitting).
- FILL VALVE through tank (gaskets)
- Flapper Valve base, gaskets & bowl interface ring

TO Make sure all the surfaces are clean an firmly
positioned and it is not LEAKING anywhere... place
clean dry paper on the floor behind the bowl
(under the tank).

EACH/EVERY drop will leave a mark...
Do NOT over-tighten any fittings!!!

If the WALL VALVE is less than NIMBLE... also a great opportunity to UPGRADE TO A QUARTER TURN

Hope this helps.

When the toilet back is removed does the seal need to be replaced?

Yes the rubber gasket between the bowl and the tank should be replaced, because it takes the imprint of the flush valve and ther's no way to make sure it goes back in exactly the same place, so it could leak, They are not expensive and should be replaced, along with the tank to bowl gaskets.

How to stop leaking between the tank & toilet bowl

There is a rubber seal which is situated between to tank and bowl which may have failed and needs replacing. You will need to drain the water from the tank, remove the tank bolts and remove the leaking seal. Replace the seal and tank bolts with new parts and you will be all set!

Try holding the handle down until the tank empties completely. If the tank leaks into the bowl during or after refill, the flapper is defective and not sealing correctly.

Toilet leaking from tank when I flush. Want to know how I can fix the problem

Common areas for tank leakage are the bolts that attach the tank to the bowl and the gasket between the tank and the bowl. The hardware could simply be loose or the seals could be deteriorated and in need of replacement. Begin by flushing the toilet to find the source of the leaking. Check for moisture on the tank attaching bolts under the tank and tighten the bolts carefully to avoid cracking the tank. If moisture is oozing out of the joint between the tank and the bowl, it will be necessary to drain and remove the tank to get access to the gasket for examination and possible replacement

Water is leaking from the tank to the bowl.

I've had this happen before. Mine was a bad seal between the tank and the bowl. I had to replace that stopper and the gasket underneath it between the tank and the bowl. It's not very complicated or dangerous, but you will have to remove the tank to do it. Have plenty of towels ready and plan for a place to sit the tank in (maybe your bathtub) while you are working.

Hello, W/D here.
The gasket you are talking about is hard to get into the hole properly. It tends to want to "bunch up" on one side or the other. The easiest way that I know of to install it is to place the gasket on the tank and then to wet the seal and wiggle the tank as you set the tank onto the back of the bowl. Water based jelly also works (better). Just apply sparingly if using the jelly; place a little around the seal, and a little around the molded socket of the bowl, and place the tank on the bowl. wiggle the tank back and forth lightly, then align the tank with the bowl and insert the bolts. If you have a mirror and flashlight, use them to help inspect your work as you go.
Best regards, --W/D--

Water leaks from tank to bowl till water level in the tank is jus

Yes. You will have to remove your tank from the bowl to replace the defective fill stack(the tube thing your flapper is attached to) it is not as hard as it seems.First remove water supply tube. Then remove the through the tank bolts. should be two of them. Lift off and turn tank upside down. remove spud gasket. Unscrew old stack. You should be able to get a universal kit to work with your tank and should come with all new parts including new flapper and spud gasket. You will need new through the tank bolts and note the sequence of assembly to get water tight seal on tank. Hope this helps
