More than likely the defrost thermostat on the top of the defrost clipped onto the coil is bad,if not it can bethe defrost heater underneath the evap coil thats open and cant heat,or the defrost control board located behind the control panel is bad and not powering the defrost heater and thermostat

What if the refrigerator side is not getting cold and the freezer side has a lot of lce on back but does not get that cold eather

Completely defrost your freezer and then plug it back in. A lot of fridges get there cold air from a vent connected to the freezer unit and that could now be blocked by ice. Your cooling coils also won't work correctly once they are covered in ice. So completely defrosting it and letting is sit open for a day or so to get the ice completely melted out of the vent and cooling coils should fix the both problems.

JCD2289AES jennair fridge refridgerator side is not cold but the freezerside works

The fridge side is not getting enough cold air from the freezer side. This could be due to a few things. The vents from the freezer is blocked, or the evaporator fan/motor has failed, or the evaporator coil is iced up due to the defrost circuit failure.

To check which is the problem you will need to empty the freezer to you can get access to the panel that covers evaporator coil. After removing the panel check to see if the fan is turning, also note whether the evaporator coil is iced up. If it is iced up, then the defrost circuit is failed. The problems usually are a failed defrost heater, defrost timer or defrost thermostat.

Replacing Defrost Heater and Bracket in Freezer Section of Fridge

I ended up having to remove things in this order: all shelves, ice maker insert, ice maker top ice tray, ice maker lower motor housing, shelving support rails (2), rear evaporator coil cover. This exposed the evaporator coils (which were already dry since the fridge had been off for two days) and most importantly, the defrost heater element below the coils. The heater element was easily unplugged from it's two connectors. I tested the unit with an ohm meter and it indicated it was open (infinity resistance). I then knew it was bad. I replaced it with a new unit and put everything back together in reverse order taking care to use the same screws. The fridge appears to be back in working order.

Repeated ice over the coil

The defrost cycle is either failing to start (problem with defrost timer) or is not heating the defrost coil (most often defective defrost thermostat.)

When you defrosted did you remove the panel at the back of the freezer to defrost the drain hole for the defrosted water to drain out?

Fridge is not cold enough, freezer is working fine, but has frost

Just had the same problem with my side-by-side.

In my case, the solution was to empty the freezer side, to access a back panel INSIDE the freezer covering the fan and cooling coils. Two screws held the back panel cover on, and when I removed the panel cover I found the cooling coils to be totally iced up, preventing the flow of cold air into the fridge side. I left the freezer open for a few hours until all the ice was melted, before replacing the inside panel. (I used a blow dryer to help speed up the ice melting).

Everything's working fine now for me - good luck with yours!

Fridge stopped cooling

We had the same problem today and it was because I had not closed the freezer completely a week ago and the evaporator coil in freezer was completely iced up. A blow dryer defrosted the coil quickly. It is best to empty the freezer first and shut fridge off. You need to defrost the coil enough so air will flow through the coil. To cool the fridge cold air is drawn from this coil by an evaporator fan located above this coil behind the removable cover at rear of freezer. IF you remove this cover and this fan is turning check for ice on coil. That is probably the problem. Evap. fan is about $100 - ouch. The other thing you can check is the fridge damper control at top rear of fridge. This failed on us 13 months after we bought fridge so no warrenty. Part was $44 plus service of $100. Now I fix this fridge myself. If you remove damper cover you can cycle thermostat and see it open and close. If it is not opening replace it. You can probably find the part cheaper that $44 at an apliance parts store.

Freezer/fridge won't get cold enough

Madezmom, you have a defrost issue. If your model starts with 106 you more than likley have a bad defrost bi-metal, I will attach a picture of bad one. This sits on the evaporator in the freezer section behind the panel. You will have to remove the shelves and remove the back panel. Defrost the evaporator completely. The part number for the bi-metal is 2196155. See if yours is bulged like the one in the attached photo. If so, that's your problem..Catriver..post back.
