I need exciter brushes for a g261 and a schematic. It has a gasoline Willy engine.

Most welding supply stores have brushes.
But if they are obsolete you can make brushes from brushes that are close in oversize and proper configuration of connection

    That is what I did I, I was able to sand down a similar but thicker brush ($14).

My TB 302 cranks and runs at high idle does not idle down. I have power at all recepticals but no power at welding leads. I have checked all breakers and fuses, they are ok. what do I need to do next


there are a few things you can check on your machine,
make sure your machine is not in the remote control position, make your process switch is in the electrode hot position, the trailblazer has three slip rings, make sure the carbon brushes are not "stuck" in the holders, there are 2 circuit boards in your machine, make sure the plugs are properly inserted into the receptacles and making good contact, also make sure your ignition switch plug is clean and making good contact

How do you split the engine from the armature on older Lincoln Red Face welders?


Remove the roof, front panel, exciter brush holders, exciter nut, centering collar, exciter armature, exciter frame, generator housing, then the main armature. Support the engine carefully while doing this. I am a certified Lincoln tech and I do this monthly. Cutting the bars in the bell housing to get to the flex plate bolts can lead to a broken crankshaft. I have a poor fellows broken crankshaft here to prove it. So, please do it correctly and carefully. Also, change the armature bearing. It's cheap insurance.

Where are the exciting field wire fuses located


Try putting 12 volts DC across the commutator coils at the brushes, sometimes the generator looses it's magnetic field and this could possibly restore it but make sure it is a low current not a car storage battery.

Installed a generac 20kw about a year ago, ran fine untill 2 days ago. During a utility outage, generator ran for about 30 minutes and then stopped producing power while still running. All mains were still...


With the engine off, check the exciter brushes and slip rings which supply magnetic power for the alternator winding in the stator. Also, check the motor-to-alternator mechanical coupling. Check the breakers for tripping. To service beyond this point requires a schematic of the alternator, a voltmeter, plus knowledge of what the schematic is telling you. Good luck!

Generator starts but does not generate power


  1. Check for any blown fuse and replace. It can be traced directly from the output lines.
  2. Check field excitation. The field excitation is supplied by the battery to the excitation coil through a pair of carbon brushes. If the brushes are worn out, no excitation field is supplied and no output is generated. Replace carbon brush if found worn-out.
  3. Use an analog multitester to check the continuity of the carbon brush and the field coil.

Hobart engine drive welder has no power out put


i took an old trickle battery charger,6 volts and energize the armmiture,all so called polarizing,google it ,shows how also

No power to weld or use A/c power outlets


You don't say what model welder you have, some Miller welders have 3 slip rings and brushes some have just 2. In either case the next step is to use an ohm meter to check the resistance of the rotor and brush assembly. If this is a 2 slip ring model, take one of the wires off of one of the brushes then measure the resistance between the 2 brush terminals - it should be something between 10 and 100 ohms. If you get an open circuit measure the resistance from one slip ring to the other right at the slip rings - if you now get something other than an open you've got bad brushes (about $10 each to replace),

The 3 slip ring models are similar but have 2 rotor windings - take off the wire from the middle brush and measure from it to each of the ends.

If your rotor and brushes checked out OK you should next check the fuse in the exciter circuit, this will be on the block where the other end of the brush wires go.

If the fuse was good you need to do an excitation test. This is a bit dangerous so be careful. Look at the schematic pasted inside the case and figure out which brush is the positive (+) one. The wires are numbered and so is the schematic so this isn't as hard as it might seem.
Disconnect the wires from both brushes (all 4 wires in the 3 slip ring model) and tape them off so you won't get shocked. Get a 9V battery or make up jumpers that will let you connect the welder battery to the brushes. Start the welder and connect your temporary power supply, measure the AC at the outlets (it should be around 60VAC with a 9V battery) and the DC voltage at the weld terminals (should be above 10V), lastly measure the voltage at the wires you disconnected from the brushes (should be around 70V DC). Disconnect the temporary power supply and shut down the welder.
If you didn't get AC at the outlets and DC at the weld terminals above, something is wrong with the stator in your welder. If you didn't measure any DC on the wires that go to the brushes (most likely thing to happen), you've got something wrong in the exciter circuit. Check the rectifier, the capacitor, the exciter winding in the stator, and lastly the current control board. Older welders will also have the fine current control rheostat in this circuit (look for burned windings on it).

That's about all of the general advice I can give you without knowing more about which welder you have.
