SOURCE: need to know the correct levels of oils in a chainsaw

Most McCulloch saws use a 40:1 oil ratio if using McCulloch branded 2-stroke oil. They state 20:1 for other oils, but this is probably overkill as most name branded 2-stroke oils these days are pretty good. I would probably go for a 30:1 or 35:1 mix to err on the side of caution. This will not affect performance, it may just mean you need to change spark plugs a little earlier than usual, but the cylinders will at least be well lubricated.

SOURCE: Trying to get McCulloch MS354 35cc chainsaw started

Stiff usually means good compression. So, pump the fuel bulb, put your foot on the flat in the handle, lock the throttle open using the button on top, set choke all the way out and pull. It should kick after a few pulls. Then close choke half way, and pull until it starts, then push choke all in. If it doesn't start, disconnect spark plug and take it out. Have someone watch while the sparkplug is held against metal engine to see if there is a good spark at the plug. If not maybe needs new coil. look at plug to see if it is wet, ie, gas is getting to it to isolate problem to carburetor.

How critical is the oil/petrol mix ratio in terms of starting and maintaining engine running for a McCulloch 2 stroke chain saw?

All the lubrication for the engine comes from the oil mixed with the fuel, so it is VERY important that you use good quaility two stroke oil designed to be used in a chainsaw, and mixed as per the manufacturers recommendations, if you are not too sure then run a 25.1 fuel oil mix, if the egine lacks lubrication the piston will start to scuff around the exhaust port ( the hottest part of the engine ) lose compression and become difficult or impossible to start. A quick check is to remove the muffler and take a look at the piston skirt through the open exhaust port.

Mcculloch t 240 petrol will not start

If your petrol has been sitting in the machine for a long time then yes it is your petrol. Mix a new batch usually you cannot let that sit around for more than 30 days, I always try to use fresh mixes, usually that means making smaller batches unless you use your trimmer quite a bit, most people do not though and that's when problems arise.

Mcculloch 738 mixture adjustment? It starts ok but after a few minutes it stops working and wont start again for several hours, presumably when it is cold. Any ideas. # Thanks mcculloch 738 petrol...

You may have fuel vent problems--remove the fuel cap, then replace it and try to restart the engine. If runs for a while again, probable vent blockage. If this makes no difference, remove the spark plug and check for snappy, blue spark. If nothing or very weak, try a new plug first. If still nothing, then probable ignition module failure when hot. Use a thin business card for a pole gap and turn the flywheel magnets under the module. Allow to stick to the magnets then tighten the mounting screws. Rotate the flywheel to remove the card, then rotate it one full turn to make sure the gap doesn't close up at any point. Mixture adjustment doesn't seem to be called for here. Make sure the engine is not overheating due to sawdust accumulation. Hope some of this helps!

The fact that your engine turns over easily with the spark plug removed simply means that, with the plug removed, there is no compression, so the piston goes up and down very easily.
If it has been a while since you ran the machine, and if you left gas in it, your carb may have gotten gummed up from the gas losing it viability and turning to something like varnish. You might try spraying carb cleaner into the carb (with the air filter removed), let it sit for a few minutes, then try starting. In the future, you probably should get some fuel stablizer (available at almost any hardware store) and add it to the fuel that you use for your small machines. It will keep the gas viable for a much longer period of time.
Hope that you are lucky enough that the carb cleaner, a good dose, will work. If not, you may have to disassemble and clean out your carb. (if you've never done that, a series of digital camera photos so you know where to put things back is a good idea).

Buy some starting fluid and spray some in the carb or air cleaner intake port, if the machine is flooding do not choke while using the starting fluid, make sure you do not have too much oil in the mowwer.
