Question about Napoleon 36" Zero Clearance Top/Rear Vent Natural Gas Fireplace with Black Door

1 Answer

I have an old gas glenwood oven/range I bought at an antuque fair. I rigged it up with propane but the range puts out a very sooty flame. Another post suggests it might have been made to burn natural gas and needs to be converted to propane. Can you get natural gas in a pressurized cannister - wouldn't that be easier?

Natural gas does not come in canisters for residential or commercial use. Unless the manufacture makes a conversion kit from Natural gas to LP gas, and you perform this conversion, do not use the range. The gas is not burning properly, and is omitting high levels of carbon monoxide!

How can you tell if a 1985 wolf range burnes gas or propane? it says propane, but we bought it saying it was for gas? And how much would it cost to change out? Thanks, Mary Kaye

Most ranges are easy to convert from propane to gas or vice versa. If there is a gas regulator installed on the back gas inlet, you could see if it is running 3-6" WC or 10-12" WC, The latter is for propane. If no regulator is present the orifice sizes will need to be checked. Propane has a higher caloric value than natural gas so the orifices are smaller. One way to see would be to install the oven. If the orifices are for propane and you are using natural gas there will be too little flame. I would estimate a conversion would cost no more than $250.00 to $300.00 depending on where you are. I would hire a professional to verify. I know it is expensive but the technician will be able to check your older oven (1985) for potentially dangerous gas leaks etc while he is there.

The oven flame comes into the oven around the oven bake cover and all burners and broiler have a perfect flame. this is a brand new oven

Are you on natural gas or propane? If you are on propane did you have it converted form natural gas. Due to the difference in orface size you will be getting more gas flow then needed. If it was converted you need to contact the store and advise them it has a possible gas valve problem.

We use propane gas. At first it had lots of flames and sooty smoke. We have adjusted the Regulator and the Oven Bake Burner as much as possible but it still has yellow flames like a blast furnce. What can...

The yellow flames is a sign of poor combustion which can release carbon monoxide. It sounds very much like the range was supplied with jets intended for natural gas which operates at lower delivery pressures.
You need to ensure that the range is usable in its current condition can be used with propane. Labels on the range (generally in back) should carry warnings about the proper gas and pressures.

When you turned the oven off, if the ignitor went off and the gas kept flowing then the thermal valve is defective. Maybe that was the problem all along.
