Question about Frigidaire Refrigerators

1 Answer

My refigerator is not keeping things cool. It was working ok until, the other day, I turned down the termostat by 1 from 5 to 4, and there was an audible click. Sounded like a fuse blew or something, the light is still working and the compressor is buzzing quietly and is warm to touch.

I would also like to add: the coil at the back is completely clean and free of dust in all areas.

Sounds like you just happened to be near the defrost cycle timer as it was ready
to start the cycle and the movement was just enough to start it. You should actually
be turning the cold to a higher number (from 5 to 6 instead) and make sure that
if you have an adjustment knob in the freezer that it is set to the middle and not
to "colder" This knob controls the vent which allows cold air into the fresh food
compartment below. If it is set all the way to "colder" it will almost completely
cut off cold air flow to the lower compartment. Also if you have a thermometer
use it to set the temperature between 36 degrees and 39 degrees in the fresh
food compartment, it should stay in the fridge for 24 hours for an accurate reading.
hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your quick answer. The reason I turned the knob was because it was too cold in the fridge part. After I turned it down by 1 and heard the click, I checked the light was still working, because it sounded like the fuse blew. The light was working so I assumed all was ok. Then the entire fridge and freezer defrosted and will not now go cold at any setting.

You mentioned the compressor was running and warm to the touch, One of three things I would
look at is first is the fan running in the freezer section? If not the unit may be iced up behind the
freezer back panel and not moving any air,
Second is a stuck defrost timer, (there should be a hole under the control
panel that doesn't have a screw, you can advance the defrost timer manually with a flat screwdriver slowly, it should cycle the fan then the defrost element- you can often hear water dripping in the freezer compartment) . The third is the cold control itself, (the temp control). It may have just failed or broken internally.
If you can get it to cool by rotating the defrost timer then replace timer and the defrost termination thermostat (located behind freezer panel it is a small item clipped to a tube with two wires coming to it.)Just make sure to unplug fridge first. Model number is inside the
fresh food door on the left panel. If it doesn't cool by rotating timer (fan should come on)
then make sure fan is free and not frozen or stuck. If all is good with defrost timer and fan then
I would replace the "cold control" which is the thing you turn (two wires and a slender tube which should not be kinked). I am assuming the fridge was cooling well before this problem occurred and not due to a loss of refrigerant. The fact the problem occurred when adjusting temp makes me look towards the "cold control" as the culprit. Hope this helps.

I have a 02 Grand caravan that has new radiator, termostat, one new fan. the temp gauge goes up to max hot the drops right back down in seconds. what could be the problem?

it could be you have an air lock in the cooling system
remove the rad cap from the rad, start the engine and let it run until the coolant drops (add to fill it back up) or until the coolant boils out of the rad spout.

maybe pull the heat sensor. -replace it OR clean it off, reinstall it.

My SC BT100 is perfect until I use the IPOD dock, it works ok for 10mins but then 'blows'. the unit becomes very hot and wont turn back on until it has cooled down.

You are overpowering the Amplifier and it is protecting itself until it cools down.

The reason for this is that the output from the IPOD is already pre-amplified. If it didn't shut down you would either blow the Amplifier or Speakers.

If you keep the volume turned down to a minimum on your IPOD and use the volume control on your theater system you should be OK but still don't turn the theater system to full output.

Please leave feedback.

As a start, try cleaning the coils and fan under the refrigerator.

You would not believe how many refrigerators and freezers I've worked on which required nothing but a good coil cleaning. The dirtier these coils get, the less efficient the unit becomes until it reaches a point that it almost appears as if the refrigerant unit is not working at all when all it really needs is a good cleaning.

While you're under there, be sure the fan is running to pull air over the coils to cool and condense the freon inside them.

There are two things that make a central air conditioner freeze up, they are poor air flow, that means check your air filter, and your system is low on refrigerant, and that will take a serviceman to fill on refrigerant. For the time being set your thermostat cool/heat switch to off, and turn your fan switch to on. This will thaw out your cooling unit, and when the ice is gone you can switch the heat/cool switch to cool to resume cooling until you have figured out which problem you have.

no if there was oil leaking out then that means the refrigerant has leaked all out. you will have to have it repaired by a service tech.
