Question about Ovens

1 Answer

Help! I am renting an apt (and the owner is overseas) and the oven/range which came with it is an older Caloric Prestige series (gas range and oven) with self-clean feature. It has been cleaned so often that the numbers and oven selector controls have been scrubbed away. I can figure out off, bake, and 350 degrees. I need to self-clean the oven as the previous tenant left it a greasy, yucky mess. I have no manual and I can't read the knobs to start the process so I don't know which position the knobs must be in. I know the door must be closed and locked before starting but how many "clicks" from "off" do I need and in what direction? What else do I need to turn? I am sure there is a "Clean" mode somewhere on a knob but where? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Dear Xpert, I looked all over the oven. There is no model number. It only says, Caloric and Prestige series and self clean. On the left side of the back panel there is a light for "oven" and on the right side there is a light for "clean." It is a "free-standing" gas range/oven wedged in between counters. Now what?! Isn't there a "generic" knob that has the applications listed in a certain order? At the top of the knob on the right it is OFF and then the first application counterclockwise is Bake. Any ideas?

Please, time is of the essence now...

I think I found the model number for the Caloric Prestige series Self-Clean...

Some numbers are missing because they have been scrubbed off after all these years:

    R (then some number - perhaps a 5 or it could be an S ) 554-VW-EO

Does this help? I really need to clean the oven. If I just knew what the Selector Dial's words are and the position they are in from OFF that would be extremely helpful; also for the Oven Control/Temperature knob. Does the temperature have to be off in Self-Clean mode or must it be turned until it stops?

can you find information (sticker / label)in the body of the oven. It will be easy giving you information if you can provide the brand and model number of the oven.
Please post back!

I'm sorry for my late response. I've been looking for the manual that fits the model numbers you mentioned but can't find anything online.

I do suggest you follow the procedure for self-cleaning, the one used for most common caloric prestige series.
    1. Make sure everything is removed from the Caloric oven, including the
oven racks and broiler pan. Take all of the pots and pans out of the
    lower storage drawer, if necessary.

    2. Shift the oven's locking lever as far to the right as it will go,
tugging on the door to make sure it's firmly latched. The self-cleaning
system will not operate if the door is unlocked.

    3. Set the clock on the range to the correct time if your oven has an
automatic oven timer. If the oven does not have an automatic timer, the
model's cleaning cycle is preset to two and a half hours. Skip to Step
4 if this is the case.

    4. Set the start and stop times on the timer by pressing in on the knobs
on each of the clocks. The minimum amount of time required for a
self-cleaning cycle on a Caloric oven is one and a half hours; the
maximum amount of time is three hours.

    5. Turn the oven setting dial to "Clean." Set the temperature-setting dial
to "Clean," if possible; if the oven doesn't have that temperature
setting, set that dial to "Off." A light indicating that the oven is
self-cleaning will be visible on the oven's range display during the

    6. Allow the oven to operate undisturbed while self-cleaning. Do not tug
on the door or attempt to unlock the oven until after the cleaning
light switches off and the door feels cool to the touch.

Let me know if this procedure will help you... and post anything that confuse you..

I have a caloric oven, prestige series. Don't know model. it is about 15 years old. last year the oven wouldn't heat and smelled gas. That was repaired. Now, oven ignitor comes on but oven...

The ignitor is bad again,if it (ignitor) comes on but no flame/heat its the ignotor again, what would make the ignotor go bad so fast (usually last 10-15 years) is a problem with the oven burner, so now BOTH the ignitor and burner would need to be replaced,if it is 15 years old the ignitor is readily avaliable but the burner may not be

I just moved into an apartment that has an older Caloric Prestige oven and range and cannot find the Pilot light--Please help

Hi, The caloric ranges use diferent types of pilot igniters, to avoid any further delays, I suggest geting the model number off the stove usually located under the stove's top, you don't need any tools just lift the range top(like when you are going to clean it) the model number is located usually on a metal plate in between the burners, or if it's not there , it will be inside the oven around the door liner or the oven liner. When you do locate the model, just go to the repair website and type in the model number, follow instruction after that. see the following figure it might help in locating the model number: small_13_4.jpg
