I recently bought a Dell XPS m1710 laptop with a videochip-problem which I managed to solve. Upon booting the machine keeps asking me for a system or administrator password that I don't know. Could one of your experts please help me out? The service Tag of my laoptop is H V V V Z 2 J and the express service code is 389-333-110-51 I already disabled the cmos-battery for some hours, but in vain... Many thanks in advance! You can remove or change the Windows User oradministrator's password. You need access to a computer with Internet access todownload the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD. Then insert this CD into the laptop/computer and boot upthe laptop/computer with the Hiren's CD and follow the instructions. There are very useful utilities CD and it a Linux boot CDwhich contains quite a lot of Utility programs including a password removalprogram. Click on one of these links todownload HIREN'S BOOTCD :- http://www.hirensbootcd.net/ http://67.20.82.163/

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop that was originally Windows XP (maybe Media Center Edition, I'm not sure) and had Windows 7 Ultimate on it. I had to wipe the hard drive and I downgraded to Windows

Hello the driver can be downloaded here:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/xps-m1710

Or here at nvidia:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winxp_179.48_beta.html

Please check for other drivers missing in the device manager.
Check also for the right driver, because here is 2 different ones.

Try the nvidia page first, this should work for you.

Good luck

Windows 7 on dell xps m1710 - problem with cpu performance. according to device manager the drivers are in correctly. but i can see in windows performance information, it is very poor rating compared to...

CPU does not need a driver. the 'driver' is nothing more than a way to identify the CPU. (ie model, stepping, etc). I would suggest ignoring windows and run a Dell diagnostic. if the hardware checks out ok, then its a programming issue. It could also be a BIOS issue. Check the BIOS to make sure CPU cache is enabled, and everything is set for high performance. If your machine is under warranty, CALL DELL and have it serviced or replaced.

Dell m1710 xps will not boot, grey screen only. battery light, num lock lights work and hd lighyt flashes momentarly, then goes off.

Are you certain the laptop is not booting? I had one the other day, customer thought it wasnt booting, but it was the LCD screen that was bad. She had only a gray screen too. Something to try, with the screen up, put your hand on the top of the LCD (fingers on the plastics on the back side, thumb on the screen at about the same position) about 4-5 inches from the left edge and squeeze gently. Does the screen change at all, vertical or horizontal color lines? If it really is NOT booting, try F12 when first powering up and if you get to the boot menu, choose diagnostics, run them and see if you get any errors.

Can my hard drive be salvaged? Recently, while using my laptop (XPS m1710), an error came up :'Hard Disk Failure'. It then told me to back up all of my data. While I was doing this, one big file stalled...

What i've done in the past is to hook up the hard drive from your laptop to a normal desktop computer. You will need the right hookups to hook the power and the cable from the laptop hard drive to your desktop computer.

Once you hook up your hard drive to the desktop computer then you can try and do a copy and paste of the items you want from the laptop hard drive to the desktop hard drive and then burn the files to a blank dvd or cd. If you can't do this then the hard drive is beyond damaged and you won't be able to recover any data.
