any prescott/netburst based xeon- basically, any xeon before the advent of the core2 archetecture.

depending on your motherboard's voltages, the fastest upgrade you can count on would be to a 3.2ghz chip with a notably larger cpu cache.

you could check with hp support for any bios updates to allow for newer chips; however, even if available, bios "flashes" completely destroy the motherboard if the smallest glitch occurred during the process

    Can support processor

If the CPU is not compatible with the Motherboard there is nothing you can do . You can get a CPU for the motherboard that is compatible or you need to replace the Motherboard if you want to use a certain CPU. CPU have different requirements in Voltage and the number of pins for different sockets.

    Supermicro X6DAL-TG boot problem

I have 3 of these boards; however, they all have the Nocona Xeon with a Front Side Bus speed of 800MHz. The manual does not say anything about using a 533fsb. A second thought was if your power supply is an ATX with a 24 pin power connector and two +12 connectors one 8 pin and one 4 pin? The manual states all three need to be connected for the Xeon Processor.

    ASUS P5Q3 with Xeon CPU

Yes, it will work. However it depends on which one you buy. Here's one that will work with that particular motherboard.

First, visit this website. Now search for, "Xeon" (Without the quotes, though). Click the second result on the list, which should be the, "Intel Xeon E3110 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E3110 - Retail." That processor is a 45NM LGA-775 processor, which Asus claims that motherboard can support 45NM LGA-775 processor.

Let me know if I can assist you further, or if I need to explain anything in more detail. If this solves your question, please rate the solution.
