Question about Garden

1 Answer

I have a lawn mower with a 18 Hp Honda engine twin cyl. I have about 700 hours on it. One of the Cylynder will not fire when it is cold. I switch the plugs around at least a coule times and it will finally hit and after it warms up it runs on both (no Problem) It has spark on both and when I pull the plugs out--the one that is running is clean but tha one that is not hitting is wet with fuel. Is this a valve adjustment or something else. My email is dkwinchester@wildblue .net

I believe you are right. I have new plugs (2x), great compresion, adjusted valves and it still has the same cylinder not firing. The plug is damp when I pull it out.

    Thanks for your help, dw

Try new plugs but I reckon you have one weak coil. It takes less voltage to fire a plug in a warm cylinder

What is the compression lbs for a 18 hp brigg/stratton intek engine

Not sure where to get compression pounds for this, but let me refer you to the Briggs website for detailed product specs and power curves.
Intek can be twin or single sylinder.

For Twin....

For single....the are in 1/2 HP ratings but the link is below....

If further detail is required, I will need the model type and trim found on the valve cover.

I have a 1998 Craftsman 19.5 HP opposed twin turbo, and it wont start without taking the right plug out, which releases compression, and then put it back in, and the cylinder will fire and run accordi

You might try putting an inline valve in the fuel line feeding the carburetor or simply clamp the line shut to see if that works.
It sounds like hydro lock due to fuel getting into the cylinder when the engine is not running, Briggs had an issue with it along with others, some (like Honda) have a solenoid in the float bowl to stop the fuel flow. If this works install the valve, shut it off and let the tractor idle a minute before shutting down the engine

Changing oil in Biggs and Stratton engine

Use 10W30 weight oil. The capacity is 1.5 Quarts (48 ounces) with filter change. I highly recommend you use 100% synthetic oil in an air cooled engine. Change the oil and filter every 50 hours of use.

My 18ph twin spins but only starts when I short one of plugs to ground. what is the problem?

I don't know what to tell you to do to fix this but I am convinced there is a broken ground somewhere in your system. When you ground one of the spark plug wires, you complete the circuit to ground allowing the other to fire.

You are not real specific as to that kind of Lawn Trimmer or Edger this 18 HP twin engine is hooked to nor what kind of 18 HP engine this is: electric start or magnito fired.

Look for a broken ground somewhere in your ignition system please.

Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Intek V - Twin Vertical engine 24hp,48in riding lawn mower, keeps smoking.

these are common for doing this ,if you dont want to pull it down and hone the cyl. then i would use a heavier oil say 20w/50and that will probabley solve your problem

Sears 19 hp twin 42 inch tractor, won't start if hot

Two things come to mind. First it could be not getting enough fuel when hot due to carb adjustment being too lean. That could be that the float level in the carb is set too low or the low speed jet is set too lean. When cold the choke circuit in the carb supplies the extra fuel required.
Second in some enjines that have low compression they start cold but when hot the compression drops below 60 psi and makes starting very difficult until engine cools down.
I suspect a fuel problem.
