Pull out the fridge and unplug. Remove the back cover. Clean the condenser coils and fan. If they're difficult to get to, use compressed air to blow out. (you can get a can from walmart). That should fix the problem. If that doesn't work, then write back.

The overload/relay is probably bad .This is the part plugged onto the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires plugged onto it . You can easily replace this part . Be sure to have your model number when ordering .

Your compressor may be trying to start and have a bad start capacitor, start relay or overload. If you hear the fans that tells me the thermostat has also told the compressor to start. Unplug and pull away from the wall. remove lower cover over the compressor area and feel the compressor on the top. If too hot to keep you hand there leave the refrigerator unplugged until we locate why the compressor is trying to start but will not. tell me the age of your refrigerator. I will keep checking for a response from you and will be here to help, Thanks, Sea Breeze

You've identified the problem, now check if your model is listed on SearsDirect with an illustrated breakdown:
They have many thousands of appliances listed in their library besides Kenmore and Sears.
If present, you can determine if you want to DIY or hire a service company to do the work. You can order the part through Sears if model is listed or if you have a Johnstone Supply in your area, they will have a compatible (or original, if you want another crappy fan motor) for fewer dollars.
I'm starting to really hate Whirlpool.
