Hotpoint Future fridge freezer - freezer working well but top of the back of the fridge has a large build up of ice ??? And doesn't appear to be keeping the food cold enough

here are lots of things that can cause cooling problems. One of the most common causes of poor cooling in a frost free refrigerator is a defrost system failure. In such a case one or the other compartment may appear to be keeping proper temperature but that too may change in a short period of time. The fridge compartment's temperature rise is usually (but not always) the first to be noticed. Frost" and "Ice"
There is a difference between "frost" (a white, snow-like substance) and "ice" (usually clear and solid). When referring to what is seen during an inspection, please keep this distinction in mind as the possible causes for each are often very different. The Defrost System
Inspecting the (usually rear) wall of the freezer compartment for a frost build up is necessary. (In the case of many GE top freezer models, check the freezer's bottom panel.) If there is a frost coating on it, it is often a sign of excessive frosting beneath it. Sometimes however the evaporator cover panel will actually need to be removed (see the illustration below) before an excessive frost build will visible.
The refrigeration system's evaporator (cooling) coil is usually in the freezer compartment. This evaporator will periodically frost over and have to be defrosted by means of a heating system. When the defrost heating system fails, the frost can accumulate to such a degree that airflow throughout the appliance is hampered. There may be just enough air circulation to cool the freezer section but that will eventually stop too.

FREEZER NOT FREEZING PROPERLY

There could be a large list of things that cause the freezer to warm up from the temperature it was before. The most likely reason is you probably have a defrost problem. Defrost heater, defrost thermostat and the defrost control are all things that may have failed. If your model is not a frost free let me know. Look inside freezer for a layer of frost building on the rear wall. If your refrigerator is not defrosting it will be a short time before the fresh food compartment begins to warm. To extend the time your refrigerator and freezer can keep food safe defrost by placing a bucket of hot water inside the freezer and close the door. Please place food from freezer and fresh food compartment into another refrigerator or cold storage area. By keeping doors shut as much as possible the refrigerator and freezer will last up to a week this way before defrosting again, Sea Breeze

Fridge is cold, freezer is not

Please look into the freezer for frost build-up on the rear wall. If you are having a defrost problem it may limit the freezer temperature and still be cold enough for the fresh food section to remain at safe temperatures but not for long before freezer and fresh food section warms because frost blocks airflow and the evaporator is unable to keep everything cold because of frost build-up. I don't have your model number so I will list the parts that may need to be replaced. The defrost control=> 12002754 Frost Kit, defrost thermostat and 67002493 Defrost Heater Assembly

For testing of the defrost thermosat and defrost heater refer to the same page as the parts, If these parts are good the the 12002754 Frost Kit, could be defective. The 12002754 Frost Kit,
can be found in the control panel inside the fresh food compartment. Let me know if you have questions and also if you are not having a defrost problem, Thanks Sea Breeze

Fridge at room temp

Good day,
two common reasons fro this.
1. The fan motor in the freezer compartment has failed and is not driving air to the fresh food compartment.
2. The second common problem is the defrost system has failed, blocking air from entering the fresh food compartment.
First indication is frost building up on the rear panel in the freezer. Remove rear panel and inspect.

Here is an excellent tutorial on defrost system repair.

MY FREEZER WORKS BUT NOT MY FRIDGE WHAT CAN i DO?

Good day,
There was a time when most Kenmore refrigerators were produced by whirlpool, but no more. A model number would help. So the answers are generic.
1. The defrost system failed. Tell-tail signs included frost building up on rear panel of freezer comportment. The system is made up of three parts, and is the most common cause for your problem.
Look here for an idea on how the system functions..

http://www.appliance411.com/faq/howdefrostworks.shtml

2. The fan motor in the freezer compartment failed, not discharging cold air to the fridge compartment. You should be able to hear the fan running, when you open the freezer door.
3. Lights not going out when the fresh food compartment door is closed.
4. On some versions, if the freezer control is set too old, it will deny the fresh food compartment enough air to cool.
5. On other styles the control for the fresh food compartment is pneumatic (opens and closes to allow more or less air in as needed). This control can fail shut, not allowing any cold air to enter the fresh food compartment.

Freezer and coller issues

The refrigerator is not defrosting. Need to know the complete model number and brand. Look at following areas for the model number
  • Beneath Or Inside Food Compartment On Cabinet Frame
  • On Plate Lower Front Or Rear Of Cabinet
  • Beside Compressor Door On Right End
  • Near Rear Of Cabinet
  • Inside Liner At Top
  • If you can find defrost timer turn clockwise slowly until you hear fridge turn off. Should remain off for 20 min. so ice will melt inside freezer. Let me know, Sea Breeze

The freezer works just fine, the food/milk compartment is room temperature, even though the control is at 5. Can I fix this myself?

Open the freezer door and listen. If you can't hear a fan running inside the compartment then you probably need a new evaporator fan. If you can here it check for excess frost on the rear panel inside the freezer section. If there is frost there then you have a defrost problem. If there is no excess frost then you should check the damper at the top or the fresh food section. Let me know if you need more info. Good Luck!
