You did not say what machine this is, however most carbs will run on a basic setting of 1 1/4 on the L and 1 on the H screw, now start the saw and warm up, start screwing the L screw in, the revs will increase as the mixture weakens, when the saw reaches its peak and starts to die because its too weak turn the screw out 15 minutes on a clock face, check the saw accelerates well with no flat spot, if need be turn out a little more until it does, now adjust the idle screw so as it idles well without the chain moving around the bar, the H screw is a govener so the more you screw it in the faster it goes, you realy need to check this with a tachometer it should nor exceed 12500 rpm

The carburetor actually is a mixing place for the air and fuel. If the mixture is not in appropriate proportions this issues surfaces. Many a times as the carburetor gets old, the jet, idling valve etc., may not function properly. My suggestion would be to replace the carburetor unit itself or try adjusting the air intake valve or air filter adjustment.

Proper adjustment for carburetor


A proper adjustment of a carburetor can only made IF ....

The seals on the crankshaft are good , no leaking gaskets and a good clean fuel line (and no tankairiation problem) and the cillinder compression is good and also a clean airfilter on the carburetor if you adjust .
Then if thats good then only you can trust on the L + H and trottle adjustment

Why did you need to clean the carb? Routine servicing of the aircleaner would keep the carb clean for life. The pilot screw should be 1.5 turns out approx. with a small adjustment either way. Idle speed is set to a smooth low idle.If this doesn't fix it have you got something in the carb not replaced correctly? The float needle/float assy? How did you clean it? Have you introduced fluff/dirt into the carb and did you blow it clean with an airline?

As i understand, all VTi´s had injected engines, but in case your particular model is carburated, my advice is: Take it to have it cleaned by a mechanic that knows carburetors. Have in mind that carburetors have a myriad of screws, jets and wires that might get lost or switched during reassembly. Furthermore, the jets, butterfly openings, floats and other devices require detailed, minute adjustments for proper functioning. All those adjustments are lost when disassembled for cleaning. Also, some rubber / plastic parts and seals will not withstand the acid bath, so a new kit must be included as well.

Toro lawnmower starts then cuts off. It appears to be leaking fu


If there is a fuel leak causing this problem it could be from the line going to the carburetor or the float bowl. If no leak is present there, could be flooding or a sticking needle in the carburetor allowing fuel to enter constantly.

>>The Following is a Basic Instruction File I made for Checking the Carburetor Solenoid. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>**Check for Current/Voltage (10.5 VDC Minimum) to the Carburetor Shut Off Solenoid. If the Carburetor Shut Off Solenoid has Current, then On Some Solenoids you can Remove the Needle and Replace the Solenoid to Test them.
>>****PLEASE DO NOT OPERATE THE MOWER WITH THE SOLENOID BYPASSED IN THIS MANNER. THIS IS "ONLY" FOR TESTING.****
>>For Others, Remove the Carburetor Solenoid and Go to the Hardware Store. Purchase a Bolt of the Same Diameter and Threads. It Needs to be 1/2" to 3/4" Long for the Horizontal Mount Solenoids and 1/4" to 1/2" Long for the Vertical Mount Solenoids. Put this Bolt in Place of the Solenoid. If this Corrects the Engine Problem, then Replace the Solenoid.

Tooo much fuel pull cord fuel expels through exhast.

The Carburetor Float Needle Valve is Not Seating Properly and is Causing the Engine to Flood or the Head Gasket is Blown between the Push Tube Galley and Cylinder and the Head Gasket Requires Replacing.
Check the Oil and Make Sure it has Not become Contaminated with Gas. Change Oil if it has a Gas Smell or the Crankcase is Over Filled.
Soak and Clean the Carburetor and Replace the Float Needle Valve.

Carb needs cleaning


You actually have 4 carburetors on that bike. Remove the bodywork, the seat, and I think the fuel tank has to come off, then you should see the four carbs. Best bet, take it to a dealer and have them do a tune up, they will clean and adjust the carbs as part of the service.
