You can follow these steps:

How to Turn a Scanned Document Into Microsoft Word Document

1) Scan the page you want to convert into a Microsoft Word document.
2) Save the scanned image in *.gif, *.jpeg or whatever format.
3) Open that image, go to "File->Save As" and name it "xyz.tiff" in the "TIFF" format as shown.
4)Go to "Start->Programs->Microsoft Office Tools->Microsoft Office Document Imaging"
5) Go to "File->Open" and open your scanned document that has been saved in *.TIFF format.
6) Go to "Tools->Send Text to Word." You will get a prompt stating this process will take time, Click OK. This will take some time depending on your computer's speed (a minute or two at the most).
7) When it's done it will open up Microsoft word on its own and the scanned document will now be in editable mode.

Or You can also go to this Microsoft Article here to follow instructions on how to edit scanned image or document in MS Word.

Hope this information helps!

You need OCR software installed in your PC

go to www.hp.com then type OCR application then download it in your pc

OCR Application File name: I have a problem after scanning, I cannot bring - s.gif 23902_hpcom_OCR_120_003.exe [1/1, 54.84M]

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&softwareitem=oj-72836-2&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
Text Cannot Be Edited After It Is Scanned to a Word Processing Program
Issue After scanning into a word-processing program, the text in the original is not editable. Workaround The process of changing text from an image to editable text is called optical character recognition (OCR). Text should automatically be converted in the OCR process when the Send To destination is a word-processing program. If it does not, check the items in the following list:

  • Select Editable Text as the image type in Scan Settings . In Windows XP, this setting is automatically selected if Scan Document is selected in the Director program.
  • Scan at a resolution of at least 300 dots per inch (dpi) for correct OCR conversion. Check the default resolutions in the Scan Settings on the Resolution tab.
  • If portions of the scan are cut off, turn off the Auto Crop feature in the Scan Settings on the Scanning tab by clicking to clear the check mark.
  • Tables, text boxes, and spreadsheets might not be editable. The border around them makes the OCR program read them as images. Readiris OCR, which is included with the HP Officejet G and K series, can recognize these images. Instead of selecting the word-processing program in the Send To list, send the scan to Readiris. Use the Table Drawing tool on the right side of the window to change the type of image to a table, and then use the OCR. The text inside of the box should now be editable.
NOTE: Handwritten messages might not be captured by the OCR process.

Your's Truly,

Christian from HP

I am trying to edit a scanned document.

Your scanned document is in graphic format so you need any applicaton with capacity to edit graphics. What is your operating system? For windows, the simplest one is MS Paint up to Photoshop.
Be more specific, please

Word docs sent as email attachments are arriving in my inbox as png files - useless. How do I change this please

.PNG stands for "Portable Network Graphics". Sounds like the sender may have scanned the document, and sent the scanned document to you? Scans will come out as either .png, .jpg, or .pdf formats.

If the file is a .png, you won't be able to edit in MS Word.

Another thing to check - Make sure when you are working on a Word Document, you are saving it as a .doc file.

  • Open MS Word Document
  • Do your editing
  • Click on the "Fille" button, and then select "save as" option
  • In the window that appears, next to the "save as type" wording click on the down triangle to see different formats to save. Select ".doc"
Bottom line... tell whomever is sending the emails with attachments, to send you the MS Word file, not a scanned file.

I have a hp 1310 AIO Printer how do you scan documents to computer using such programmes as ms word

MS Word cannot open scanned documents to edit. You need to run a scanned document through an OCR program (optical character recognition program) which converts the scanned document into a text document. Then you open Ms Word and import or open this text document to edit or change the text.

Documents scan as images only on x4550 lexmark. have reinstalled number of times. when i first bought it, it work fine. i can't edit documents because they come up as images on ms word

Most probably, the scan software is corrupted now. Have you tried uninstalling the software completely, then reinstalling it using the installation cd? What is the operating system of your computer? How is the printer connected to your computer, hardwired or wireless?

CAN'T SCAN TEXT

If you scan the document, make sure it is saved in JPEG format. What you do afterwards is to download FreeOCR. This program is free and works better than most of the ones you purchase.

Just install it in 5 minutes, open your scanned jpeg image and click on OCR button and in seconds, the program will bring it up in editable format for you to change, correct or whatever. Or just click on the OCR MS Word button, and it will open it up in Microsoft Word. Here is the link..

How to scan and edit text document

You must use an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program

Run the "ScanSoft OmniPage" software that came with your printer.
Load the document into the scanner and "acquire" the document through OmniPage.
The pictures will not show up and the text may not be 100% accurate.
Run the resulting document into your wordprocessor (MS Word? or Works?), and run spellcheck.

2007 won't scan to Word using HP Officejet Pro L7580

unfortunately the following is from MS Word 2007 Help:

The From Scanner or Camera option for scanning documents and pictures is not available in Microsoft Office Word 2007. Instead, you can use your scanner to scan the document, and then you can save the file to your computer.
After you scan the document, you can use Microsoft Office Document Imaging to create a version of the document that you can edit.
Important The first step is to install Microsoft Office Document Imaging, which is not installed by default.

Sorry.
