Changing remote command mode for sony rdr-hx525 without remote control
When I first bought this sony hd recorder about two years ago, I changed the remote command mode to dvd1 to stop interference with other sony equipment. Recently, the remote stopped working so I bought a new one. However, the factory setting for the remote and hd recorder is dvd3, so it does not work. The manual does not show how to change the remote command mode WITHOUT a remote control. Can someone please tell me how to reset the command mode to dvd3 in order to use the remote control? Thank you.
Re: changing remote command mode for sony rdr-hx525...
Hold the "Enter" button along with the numeric button for the command mode you selected in Setup. This will reset the remote to work in the command mode you selected (also lets you get back into System Menu to try other command modes). If you pick a different command mode, you'll need to do this again to reset the remote to the selected mode. Found this info courtesy our friends on the Internet - no thanks to Sony's manual...
Re: changing remote command mode for sony rdr-hx525...
Use the procedure thats posted to GET INTO THE MENU!! I pressed enter and 1 and then was able to go into system menu and change the settings back.. I had to do it a time or two.. so there may be another step involved. i changed the settings then turned the power off and back on and it worked... you may have to hit return before you turn the power off/on.. it worked though! The original poster simply left out the part about what "Enter and 1" did.. it unlocks the remote and gets you to the menu..
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

This is a common problem for the Sony RDR-GX7 dvd recorder.
It seems to occur with various remotes (DirectTV, Bell ExpressVu or in your case, the time warner cable remote). In most cases, the problem can be solved by using a different remote frequency from the system menu as follows: Insert a dvd and make sure it is not playing (stopped). Enter the System Menu then / Setup / Options / Command Mode (this can be done from the access panel on the front of the unit). There are 3 possible values, (DVD1, 2 or 3), try changing it.
Then enter one of the suggested codes for your Warner remote (in my case, for Bell ExpressVu I selected the DVD1 command mode and I used 883 as the 3-digit code. The up and down arrows are not functional with this code but I bypass this problem by entering the menu item number. Good luck!
Indeed, I did the same thing.... I did find the answer in the manual! Here's a copy of it (pg 23):
Set the command mode for the remote so it matches the command mode for the recorder you set above. 1 Hold down ENTER 2 While holding down ENTER, enter the command mode code number using the number buttons. Command Mode Code number DVD1 number button 1 DVD2 number button 2 DVD3 number button 3 3 Hold down both the number buttons and ENTER at the same time for more than 3 seconds. 4 Let up, press RETURN, all done!
If you're seeing on the LCD of the DVD player something like "DVD1" every time you press a button on the remote, try this: Change the command mode of the remote to match the player. Do that by holding down the Enter key on the remote and pressing the respective number. In my example above, hold Enter and press
button 1 to set the command mode of the remote to DVD1. I had this problem and even unplugging the player didn't help, but the above worked for me.
Go to your DVR and manually turn the DVR off. Press the STOP button for two or three seconds. The DVR COMMAND MODE setting will display in the DVR window. (DVD1, DVD2 or DVD3)
Set the remote to the COMMAND MODE setting that was diaplayed by depressing both the remote ENTER key and the desired number key (1, 2 or 3) and holding them both at the same time for 3 seconds.
You can now use the remote to set the DVR to the desired COMMAND MODE. To do this depress SYSTEM MENU on the remote and go to SETTINGS and then COMMAND MODE. Select either DVD1, DVD2 or DVD3. Once you delect a setting that is different from what was set, your remote will stop working again.
Reset your remote to the desired COMMAND MODE by depressing the remote ENTER key and the desired number key (1, 2 or 3) and holding them both at the same time for 3 seconds. The remote should now control the DVR.
Slide the bottom part of the remote control down. Switch the bottom right button to DVD 1. There might be a white sticker that covers it so remove the sticker first. Then hold down the "Enter" button and the "1" button down at the same time for a few seconds. That should make the remote work again.
