two things can be doing this ,
(1) fuel tank pick up is broken in half and works till gas works it way down to break , proof of this is when u add more gas and it starts right back up
(2) breakdown in ignition system , this can happen in a few places (if I knew your model number I can tell u more) eventually It will fail and never restart
What do you mean by 'overheats'? If it runs for a period of time then dies but will restart after it cools back off the ignition module is suspect. Run it with the airbox cover and air filter removed. when it fails immediatly spray a shot of carb cleaner in the carb and try to restart. If it wont start its the module if it does start and you can keep it running on a prime then its a fuel issue.
Does the mower die right away (cuts out) or does it sputter to a halt. Sputtering out would indicate a fuel problem. If it just cuts out when hot, then more likely an ignition problem. Your coil may need replacing. Take a close look at the coil wire (spark plug wire) and its routing. Make sure it's not touching part of the engine where it's heating up and has caused a "leak" to ground it out when it gets hot. If all is well then check your spark when the engine is hot and cuts out. Make sure you have a very good blue spark and not a weak one (check it cold first and then compare!). Again, indicating a possible ignition coil problem. Hope this helps and best of luck to you. James
sounds as though you are on the right track
but be sure to check the wiring directly from the electric clutch on the front of the motor back to the switch
a wire could be pinched in the frame and shorting out intermittingly
look around and find those wires and move them around and look for chaffing and tightness
and what you could also do is to unhook the clutch at the connection to it at the front of the motor and engage switch and ride around and see if fuse blows and if not you may have an electric clutch issue
