The Acer Aspire One Netbook has a hidden partition containing the files required for restoration to the original factory condition. The restoration clears all user data from the C: drive and requires that you have the netbook plugged into its AC adapter as the process takes significant time during which it should not be interrupted at the risk of hard disk corruption. To begun the process....
1. power on the netbook while it is plugged into its AC adapter
2. during power-on, while the Acer Logo is showing, press Alt and F10 together several times
3. Acer eRecovery loads showing the Windows screen momentarily
4. follow the on-screen directions and make the selection to recover the factory default image

If you could start Windows then you could move your data files to a USB thumbdrive/memory stick or even a SD memory card if you have spare ones. However, your problem is you can't even start XP to move your files. It is a little late to realize this, but this is why you need to do regular back-ups of your data files to removeable media. It would not have been hard especially if you consistently put your photos and other data files into the My Documents folder. However, you didn't mention your model of the Acer Aspire One Netbook. If it's the 8.9" screen netbook (AOA 150 model ZG5) the version of eRecovery does not provide the option of saving the user's data files. If it's the 10.1" screen netbook (D250 model KAV60) the version of eRecovery has the option of saving the user data folders in a saved folder as part of the C: drive recovery. If you are fortunate enough to have the 10.1" screen netbook, then follow the on-screen directions and make the selection to save the user data as part of the recovery process. If your netbook is the one with the 8.9" screen, you can try pressing F8 on start up to get the screen for Windows Advanced Options Menu to try 1. Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) or 2. Safe Mode or 3. Safe Mode with Networking or 4. Safe Mode with Command Prompt. If one of these alternatives work, then you could move your data files off of the C: drive to save them in USB thumbdrive/memory stick or SD memory card. CAUTION: Before removing media that you have written to, be sure to either eject it in Windows Explorer or click the Safely remove media icon in the Taskbar then click to safely remove it. This is done to flush any write caching to the media prior to its removal. Not doing this risks data corruption of the media if pending writes have not completed when the media is physically removed. Finally, it appears that you have access to another computer while in Russia so you may try making a bootable USB thumbdrive/memory stick with Knoppix or other similar stand-alone operating system. You would first power off the netbook, plug the thumbdrive into the USB port on the left side of the netbook, then power on the netbook and press F12 during start-up while the Acer Logo shows. You will get the Boot Menu which will have USB HDD as one of the options on the Boot Options Menu. Use the up/down keys to high-light option for the USB HDD and press ENTER to select it. Once Knoppix loads, you can use this Linux environment to locate and copy your data files into another USB thumbdrive plugged into one of the other USB ports.

For help with using Knoppix, there is an excellent article called "System recovery with Knoppix" that you can read at the following URL.... (copy to your browser's address window to go to it)http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/...

  • Bill Yee Apr 11, 2011

Similar to Windows Explorer, Knoppix has Konqueror which can be invoked by clicking on one of the desk top icons. On the Aspire One Netbook, the C: drive is mounted read only as Hard Disk sda2. Clicking on sda2 will start Konqueror with an initial location of /cdrom which must be changed to /media/sda2 and which results in the C: drive's root folders being displayed. Hover the pointer over Doc... icon shows the full name of Documents and Settings. Clicking on this shows the user folders. Click on the relevant folder for your user then click on My ... icon to open My Documents to check that the contents are your documents and your photos. Now you can plug a spare USB thumbdrive into one of the other USB ports. Knoppix will find it and ask what you want to do - reply to open in a separate window. Now, going back to the other window, you can click on the folder My Documents then drag and drop it into the window for the spare USB thumbdrive to copy all of your files from the My Documents folder. Hopefully this is easier to follow than the article I mentioned earlier and that you will be able to save your data files and photos before doing the restore of your netbook to its original factory condition.

Need to reset acer aspire 1200 desktop

The Aspire One is a netbook produced by Acer; it does not come equipped with a CD ROM drive, so a traditional hard drive reformat and Windows reinstallation is not possible without a peripheral storage device. An external USB CD or flash drive will suffice, however.Difficulty:Moderate

Instructions

    • 1 Plug in the external CD drive, then turn on your netbook and let it boot to your operating system.
    • 2 Open your web browser and go to the BootDisk website (see link in Resources). Download the Windows XP Fresh Install Bootable CD, then burn these files to a blank CD via your external CD drive.
    • 3 Ensure the files have burned to your bootable CD, then restart the netbook with the CD still in the drive.
    • 4 The netbook should boot to the CD upon the restart. Follow the instructions prompted for installation. Upon completion you will have a clean installation of Windows XP on your Acer Aspire One.

I have downloaded skype successfully onto my acer aspire netbook. where will I find it on the netbook?

Hi,

You can try to search it on your computer if you're using Windows XP. Open my computer than Press Control + F type the name of the program then select the your hard drive the click on Search.

Windows Vista and Seven: Click on Start then on the lower left under All Programs or Programs just type Skype. and you'll see the installer. The next time you download a file make sure you verify the specific location where you save it.

Thanks for using Fixya.

I have a problem with my netbook which can't start, I have this message: ...the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem

Hi

Windows system 32 config file is part of the operating system and when this is missing or corrupted, you cannot boot up your computer. The only solution is to reinstall or repair your operating system. Good Luck.

How can I re install my wintowsvista in acer 5235

Please click on the following location, you will be able to download the user manual for your laptop model (5235)

http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Document/User%20Manual/AS_GE_1.0_A_Eng.zip?acerid=633646694786956080&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire%205235&OS=V10&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_6

The download is a Zip file, your windows XP / vista should be able to open it and you will find the PDF file (you need adobe PDF reader to open this file)

Go to page 68 of this manual and you will find the procedure to restore windows from backup discs if you have created one. If you have not created full system backup, then you need the windows vista DVDs that came with the computer..

When i turn on i get this "Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM " "you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup...

Looks like the whole folder is missing ???
Reinstall Windows XP in a different folder then reboot.Find your data files and back them up on a different medium. USB stick, etc....
Any 3rd party programs may not beable to be save as they need to be reinstalled.
After retrieving the files reformat the HD and reinstall windows on a fresh start.

I it possible to uninstal Linux OS and instal Windows XP to the Aspire One ?

Hi,
Yes you can install XP on that netbook.
Now because there is no optical drive in that netbook you will need an external CD/DVD drive connected to the netbook and an XP install CD.

You can get the Windows drivers from Acer here >>>>>>>

http://gd.panam.acer.com/home/

Just look under the netbook for the correct model number, select netbook, then Acer One and click on your model to download the drivers.

Regards.
