Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Intek V - Twin Vertical Ohv Engine with Electric Start 22 Hp, 1" X 3 5/32" Shaft, ModelNo. 44K777 - 0027 - E1

Open Question

Engine starts and idles fine. Increase throttle to 1/2 speed and it is ok. Increase throttle to full and it starts it starts to emit black smoke like it is flooding. Also when the electric pto is engaged it does the same thing. Fuel had alot of water in it due to owner having bad gas can storage. Cleaned out the tank, gas filter, removed carb and cleaned. no noticable damage.

I have the exact same problem. Serviced carb: (Nikki) replaced carb gasket and o-ring. Blew out all the ports and orifices. Replaced fuel lines and filter. Sorry this is not a solution, just additional info for someone who may have an answer

SOURCE: B&S engine backfires, runs better with choke 1/2 out under load??

Check your rockers inside valve covers. They some time work loose. If they are loose the push rod will fall off rocker and cause the problem.

If this mower has a single lever that controls the throttle and the choke, then it is probably closing the choke before you get to the "start" position. To determine if that's the problem, get to where you can see the choke lever operate, then with the mower off have someone advance the throttle lever slowly until you see the choke start to move. Good luck, Al K

Instructions
    • 1 Park your RSV 1000R on a well-ventilated, level area, using its kickstand.
    • 2 Start the engine and let it idle in place until the temperature gauge built into the instrument cluster indicates a minimum internal temperature of 180 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the motorcycle's ideal operating temperature.
    • 3 Take note of the engine idle speed, using the tachometer needle, while the engine is running. Ideally, the engine should idle steadily at 1,250 rpm.
    • 4 Adjust the engine idle speed to 1,250 rpm, using the idle adjuster screw hidden between the lower right edge of the fuel tank and the upper edge of the right middle fairing panel. Turn the idle adjuster screw clockwise to increase the engine idle speed, or counterclockwise to decrease the engine idle speed, using a small flat screwdriver if your RSV 1000R's frame (VIN number) precedes ZD4MEE009YS000292. A plastic knob allows the engine idle speed to adjusted by hand on RSV 1000R models with a frame (VIN) numbers starting from ZD4MEE009YS000293.
    • 5 Rev the engine two to three times and observe the tachometer. The engine should return to a 1,250 rpm idle. Adjust the engine idle speed as needed, using the method described, then rev the engine again. Problems may exist within the throttle control, fuel-injection system or engine, if the engine idle speed will not hold steady at 1,250 rpm. Contact your local Aprilia service facility for assistance.
    • 6 Stop the engine, once you have obtained a steady 1,250 rpm idle speed.

My 2002 Honda EU3000is, hunts at high idle. (IE: When ever subjected to a load or the econo switch is turned off) It appears to be running very rich at high idle. I have disconected the inverter unit to...

runs rich on high speed or hunts with black smoke
and fine on idle Lets understand it this way whenever there is black smoke that means there is not proper combustion in the cylender head means un burned fuel means less power which is either fuel is not pure due to dust particals or there is not proper current through the spark plug that means fuel is not burning properly and resulting in to smoke in the exoust if you have checked the fuel already then check for the current coil for proper currrent through a wiring diagrame which can possibly make you check up to the inverter level to see if your inver is malfunctioning if its ok then check the air fuel mix screw on the carburator to check that the full oxygen supply is going in the carb for proper combustion try adjusting the air fuel ratio on high speed or on load even than the problem persists check if your spark plug is wet after a brief running if it is dry thsn its fine if it covered and wet with engine oil that means engine oil is comming in to the cumbustion chamber and burning with thr fuel and resulting in to smoke for that matter you will have to check your piston rings
if your

On small 1985 14 inch craftsman chansaw what is the high and low settings set on the carb

Not knowing the model, you can always look on the body of the carburetor, there should be an "H" for the high speed mixture screw and an "L" for the low speed or idle mixture screw. Both screws should be set initially 1 to 1 1/2 turns out from seat and then the carb. will have to be fine tuned from there. The high speed screw is adjusted when the throttle is in fast position, at 1 1/2 turns out you should have a slightly rich mixture so you may need to slowly turn it in until you hear the saw's rpms start to increase. You want to find a medium point between too rich and too lean. The low speed or idle mixture screw is set the same way just at idle rpm instead of full throttle, find a medium between too rich and too lean. You should be able to throttle form idle to wide open without any "lag" or "stumbling". You can also offset any rpm change at idle with the idle speed screw (not to be confused with the idle mixture screw). Hope this helps.

Hi, I have an older toro snowblower w/ tecumseh 7 hp. When idling it is fine, but with full throttle the engine seems to over rev. I've adjusted the 2 carb settings to specs and it seemed to run well, but...

The carburetor settings should be to make the engine run correctly, not meet some specification. The upper jet is for idle adjustment and the lower adjustment is for high speed running. It the lower jet is too far CW, the engine will be running lean and tend to miss. Too far CCW and the engine will run 'muddy' and tend to blow black smoke from the exhaust. Throttle speed is determined by a balancing act between two springs, the governor, and the throttle position. Generally, there are several options for spring placement--a series of holes drilled in the throttle arm and the governor arm set this balance. Have the springs been replaced? Have you tried a fresh spark plug? You may require professional assistance on the throttle adjustment. Hope this helps!

In my honda xlr 125 i changed the main jet to #92 and slow jet to #35 is this ok? If so how can i tune the carb. I am from Sri Lanka. Its a tropical country.

The only way to know if the jetting is correct is to see how well it runs - and check the spark plug color.
You can start by warming up the engine and adjusting the idle mixture. Do this by turning the idle mixture adjustment screw (there are only two adjustment screws on the carburetor: one is the idle speed adjustment, the other is the idle mixture adjustment). Turn the idle mixture adjustment screw in or out until the fastest idle speed is attained. Then adjust the idle speed with the idle speed adjustment screw.
Now ride at full power and see how well it performs. If the engine cuts out or surges at full throttle, that means the main jet is too small. If the engine produces black smoke from the exhaust and doesn't seem to produce enough power, then the main jet is probably too big. Confirm the main jet correctness by looking at the color of the spark plug: white or light tan = too lean (main jet too small). Dark brown or black = too rich. Dark tan to brown color = perfect.

Performance issue

Did you check the ignition timing of the engine before you fire it up? Increase in temperature with increase in load is usually caused by retarted ignition timing.

A scan for trouble codes may point you in the right direction quickly, rather than hit & miss, with replacing parts. Some of the autoparts stores will scan for free, and your right where you need to be to get the right part at the same time.
