Moldy smell in washer and on towels, etc.

My front-end washer, about 6 months old, is starting to smell like mold and going on my towels. Is it okay to use OxyClean to fix the problem? Thanks...Marilyn

We had a similar problem, that actually had several causes.

    1) Washer ate a baby sock. We cleaned the filter and drain line and found that the washer had sucked up a baby sock. Washer was still functioning normally, but the sock was absorbing all the dirt and detergent and stunk! We also found $35 in the filter, which made the problem seem that much more inconsequential : )

    2) Door Gasket has an second layer that attracts all the leftover grease and grime (and smell). I found that after pulling the gasket back and wiping the gunk out, that seemed to help too.

    3) The best solution that I found was when I switched my children to cloth diapers. At that time, I also switched detergents. I switched from a liquid detergent to a powdered detergent called Charlie's Soap. It cleaned every amount of residue and smell out of the washer. Unfortunately can be a bit hard to find. I ran out last week and changed back to Tide liquid. Smell returned almost immediately. Will be sticking to Charlie's or another powdered detergent (Whole Foods 365 worked well too). Tried bleach and that only lasted about 4 days before the smell returned.

Sorry to say but your washer will need a complete tub tear down to clean out the odor.  The reason this has happened is because of excess detergent usage.  It's not mentioned in the owner's manual but most manufacturers say to use only 2 tablespoons of detergent per wash.  But since most people are used to putting in a lot of detergent, the excess suds has stuck the upper half of the tub assembly and the front loaders are not designed to rinse that off.  You will need to call a repair technician to have the unit completely torn down and cleaned out properly.

My Maytag Neptune front loader always retains water after the rinsing cycle is complete. This has lead to mold in the door gasket and a moldy smell. Is it normal for water to stay in the machine after the...

pump is probably clogged not allowing all water to drain out. Should never see water in the tub at the end of a cycle. About once a month you should run your washer through a cycle with hot water and bleach. Doing that should keep the moldy smell down.

Wash on hottest and longest cycle with regular laundry soap and a bottle of vinegar. After cycle, wash again with soap on hottest/longest cycle. This will clean your washer like new.

Mold & Smelly in Washer

Thanks for your suggestion about looking in the lip of the seal. I found one of my three year old granddaughters socks. Also, the seal for very dirty so I mixed a 50% solution and 50% solution of chlorox and used an old towel rag to wipe and wash throughly around the lip seal.

I noted that the aluminum ring inside the washer had also accumulated a lot of dirt. With one hand and fingers I held the wet cholorx towel inside the ring and with the other hand spun the tub around several turns until I had removed all the dirt and grime.

It did have a moldy smell. I'll let you know if this fixed the problem.

Moldy smell in front load kenmore washer

I had the same problem. Have you cleaned the filter under the front panel? Simply remove the three screws holding the panel below the door and remove the 2" white screwcap. Be sure to have a basin handy to catch the water. (possibly a couple of gallons if the stainer is really clogged) I suspect you'll find several moldy items that are causing the odor. Good luck.

Foul smell

More then likely you're still using too much detergent and liquid softner. Front load washers use about 1/10 the water of a top load so all you need to use is about 1 tablespoon per load of soap and softner. If you use any more then that it builds up inside the tub behind the drum where you can't see it and starts to smell. Running the machine empty about once a month with just bleach will help stop the build up. If you do this and see soap suds that's left over soap coming out. If you see suds run it again and again until the water stays clear and you odor problem should be gone. You can go back to colored towels.

Smells of mildew and so do clothes

Hi! I have Kenmore Elite 4t and had this same problem: Musty, Moldy smell in washer and on clothes. The Sears Technician suggested that I use a half a cup of Clorox Liquid Bleach and put it in the tub (not the dispenser). NO CLOTHES! Use the longest hottest setting and when it's done clean the inside (underneath rubber tire thingie) and the undernath part of the door with a papertowel. And to always leave the door open. I did what he said with the bleach and it worked. I didn't want to leave the door open because I have 2 cats & was afraid that they would want to go in it, but ended up repeating the bleach thing again because a few days later the horrible smell was back. I leave the door open all the time now and the cats never go in it. They've watched laundry spin around, so I guess they're smart enough to not want to go in it. I have not had this problem again since I always leave the door open and I did this over a month ago. I hope this helps!

The bin stinks like mold

Have had machine for 6 years.  Mold is an issue.  Occatioinally I clean out the drawer and behind the grey rubber seal with vinegar.  After a load is washed, I dry off seal and leave door slightly open.  Occationally I also wash a load of nothing but bleach.   Hope this helps.

On August 29, 2007, SFMS filed a Complaint against Sears Holding Corp. involving its Kenmore HE, HE2, HE3, HE4, HE5 and other front-loading automatic washers.
