I am receiving error code C:31:23 and a "re-insert the cassette" message on my Sony Handycam DCR-HC30. This occurs when in record or playback mode. I It is almost certainly not a moisture issue, since the camera has had ample time to dry out over several weeks.

I'm sorry that the Camcorder is displaying the error message. Please follow the troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. Turn off the Camcorder and ON again. Reinsert the Cassette. Try with a different Cassette. Perform a power resetting by following the steps below: If the issue persists, perform a hard reset by pressing the reset button located above the handstrap. Please see the below picture which helps you to locate the reset button. I hope performing the above steps will resolve the issue. If the issue persists, service may be required. Turn off the camcorder.
Remove the battery or disconnect the AC power adapter for 60 seconds.
Insert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter.
Turn on the camcorder.
If the error message appears, service may be required.

If your camcorder still shows the same error code, then you'll have to send in your camcorder for service.

OR

This may seem silly, but it worked for me. I found this on another discussion forum. Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times. Surprisingly it worked for me

The tape runs for 3 seconds then error message ''please re-insert cassette / on screen error code C:32:22 - head cleaner tape has the same effect

When I got this error I removed the battery for 10 seconds and then put it back in. Camera should come on automatically. I just did this to mine and it seems to work.

I get an eject symbol and beep and error code c32:11, original issue was that it ate a tape

The error C 32:11 denotes for mechanical unsuitability, This problem appears when the improper insertion of the cassette been done, or lose cassette tape stuck,
In all these situations mechanical adjustment is required, You are suggested to please contact any expert for the mechanical adjustment.

Flashing error message C:31:23

Hi Jazzy,
Please see the detail below for the said error codes C31:23.

According to the symptom and self diagnostic system the problem is in mechanical section (tape loading section) Therefore camera just need mechanical adjustment and will work fine again. This problem aries when the insertion of the cassette is improper or forced insertion.

TRV285 E, Insert cassette msg is appearing

I also had a similar problem. There was a message appearing "re-insert the cassette". I contacted Sony India. They advised to reset the Handycam (there is a button 'Reset' under the LCD when it is closed). After doing the Reset the message disappeared and it is working fine at the moment. I also checked up a forum for the message. A lot of people having the same problem were suggesting to whack the camcorder on the cassette side. Although i did not have to resort to it.
