Question about Apple iPhone 3G
By this do you mean you cannot hear the person speaking to you or they cannot hear you speaking to them?
If you cannot hear them speaking to you firstly try putting them on loudspeaker, if you can hear them then you know it is a problem with the speaker. If this is the case most likely you will need to replace it, i believe the part is called iphone light proximity sensor or something similar, otherwise known as flex cable #3, it a cheap part and is easily broken because the ribbon cable is so fragile.
If they cannot hear you it is most certainly a mic problem, in which case the sync port part of the phone would need to be replaced, again not that expense or difficult to do, it's basically a section which slots into the bottom of the inside of the phone and has a cable which clips in to the logic board.
either way simple fix.
hope this was some help
