Question about Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"

Open Question

I was cleaning my Poulan Pro 262 chainsaw, and accidentally caused the chain brake from working correctly. The brake will not stop the chain when pressed forward. The brake is not tight enough around the clutch drum. Can anyone help?

SOURCE: Poulan Farmhand chainsaw chain tightens too tight for motor to move chain

Make sure the chain is not over tightened. When adjusting the tightness, ensure there is at least 1/8" of looseness by pulling up on the chain in the middle of the bar and releasing it. If a chain becomes overheated because of leaning on the saw when the chain is dull, or lack of oil on the chain, it may expand in the track and not turn freely.

my name is Dennis Gladx and I can assist you with the problem of getting the sprocket off of the crankshaft of your chainsaw.

To remove the centrifugal clutch and sprocket you unscrew it from the crankshaft and it has a left hand thread. Also a little trick to remove anything from a crankshaft that could turn while you want to unscrew the item, Remove the spark plug and insert some rope into the cylinder for the piston to squeeze against and you will jam the piston without damage.

Glad to be of assistance Please rate this solution because I can learn from your rating. Thank you

Poulan pro troubleshooting

CHAIN STRETCHS AS IT HEATS - KEEP CHAIN TIGHTENED CORRECTLY AND ALWAYS KEEP OIL IN OILER AND MAKE SURE IT OILS THE CHAIN. IF THIS DOESN'T FIX - REPLACE THE CHAIN. IF IT STILL HAPPENS THEN REPLACE BAR. WILL FAIL AGAIN WITHOUT OIL. POULAN WILL NOT HOLD UP WITHOUT CHAIN LUBRICATION. WORSE THAN OTHERS. IF CHAIN OR BAR OVERHEATED YOU'LL WORK ON IT MORE THAN YOU CUT. OIL IS THE KEY TO CUT WITH A POULAN!

personally too much hassle prefer Stihl Chainsaw more reliable Seizing is caused by lack of lubrication, First check all level has oil pump seized or is it sump type when running oil circulates all way round, Still there has to be a oil reservoir if this is bone dry theres your problem the rattling is metal on metal with no protection and the damage is seizing caused by lack of oil I have two chainsaws both have oil sumps and are kept full, please check hope this helps

Chain brake on my poulan pro 50cc does not lock-in place. It just swings freely from side to side.

a worn clutch shoe or brake band is the most common cause, remove the side cover and actuate the brake, if you can wiggle the shoe or turn it at all then its for sure the shoe or band

Did you make sure the brake was off before re fitting the side cover, if not the band will be smaller that the drum and will jam the drum and stop it from turning.

Chain drive gear is locked up, will not turn. Saw was purchased March 28, 2010 at Wal-mart in Bedford,IN. Hasbeen used very little.

Just want to make sure you haven't overlooked the obvious: Is the chain brake accidentally engaged (Handle on top should be in the forward positon--if not, give it a quick snap forward to disengage the chain brake). Good luck.

I have a Poulin Pro 46cc he problem I'm having is with the brake. How can I adjust it to stop the chain.

The likely problem is that the 'toggle' mechanism for the brake is plugged with dirt/sawdust and won't allow full travel of the brake. Try compressed air to clean it out. The brake band could also have excessive oil on it--wipe it clean along with the clutch outer drum surface. Hope this helps!

I can't get the cover back on after I fixed the tension on the chain. There is a metal ring and it no longer seems to fit.

take your time with this step! The steel band is part of the brake for the saw. You will need to take very special care and take your time when putting it back together.
The trick is in the braking lever. you will need to pull back on the braking lever, align the steel band over the steel drum, and and align the two contact points that will connect the steel band to the braking lever. After it is in place actuate the lever to see if it is working correctly. This function should cause the chain to stop moving and move when the brake is released. Where strong rawhide gloves to protect yourself from the chain. Good-luck.
